Thumbs up Sequels done RIGHT! What are your favorite sequels and why?

I like a good sequel. One that takes the original and runs with it.

I just don't like sequels yearly, unless it's sports.

I understand sports and their roster updates and the competitive nature of people who play sports games hardcore, generating that money, wouldn't accept just roster updates, which is why they get annual new games/engines/features.

So, for me, Ninja Gaiden 2 and 3, Castlevania 3, Symphony of the Night, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and most Mario titles rank pretty high.

What are your favorite sequels and how come?

Resident Evil 2 - In my eyes it literally improved upon every facet of its predecessor; more expansive, better graphics, animation, voice acting, scare factor, action and narrative. An absolutely incredible game that's in my top three, if not my favourite.

Spyro 2 - Same sorta' deal, took all the good parts and expanded upon them immensely while retaining the atmosphere and feel of the original. Same applies for Crash Bandicoot, too.

I've always thought Assassins Creed 2 was a fantastic sequel, so much so that when I look for an accurate way to describe sequels to games I say, "It needs to be the 'Assassins Creed 2' of the series." It really is a shining example, as it expanded and refined the traditional gameplay while adding more variety in its mechanics. It was pretty much an improvement in every regard, which is exactly what a good sequel should be.

Edit: Uncharted 2 and Gears of War 3 also come to mind for reasons mentioned above. Excellent examples of good sequels.

Ok, in (mostly) a chronological order, out of the sequels I've played over the years
Dino Crisis 2 for just how much better in every conceivable way it was than DC1,
PoP The Two Thrones for ending the trilogy on a high note, after the barely good Warrior Within,
DMC 3 for the introduction of the styles and tweaks to the combo metering and also because of Virgil,
GTA Vice City for being the best GTA ever (bar none),
NFS Most Wanted for getting the Pursuits right, and also for the most fun single player in any NFS game,
KOF 98 for being awesome/99 for taking the story and gameplay forward/2002 for perfecting the KOF feel on the Neo Geo/XIII for being the most balanced 2D fighter I've ever played,
Tekken 6 and Tag Tournament 2 for refining a great formula and making it excellent,
Uncharted 2 same reason as DC2,
Uncharted 3 for ironing out all the kinks in Uncharted 2 and being just as big a leap in subtler ways and also because of the maturity of the characters by that point,
AC II same reason as DC 2,
AC III for taking a well established formula and rebuilding every aspect of it into something truly unique and its own all the while tying the loose ends of the Desmond arc,
And Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 for the spectacularly brilliant single player mode.

MGS2 and Resident Evil 2 are my top sequels.

Gears Of War 2 was amazing in my opinion. It had its faults but I throughly enjoyed the game as much as the first and even thought the story was great to accompany the MP. After that it all went down hill.

Uncharted 2/Assassin's Creed 2/Just Cause 2/Witcher 2 - The original games were good, but the sequels were fantastic.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Hitman: Blood Money and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - epitome of the series.

I thought the original Ninja Gaiden was better and more balanced compared to 2 and 3.

Just to chime in again I'd like to echo that Uncharted 2 also fits the criteria I've mentioned in the previous comment - it's also more pertinent given that it's this generation. It really took the foundation laid by the first and built upon it in every conceivable way making a game that smack it right outta' the ballpark. Probably my favourite game this gen!

Can't forget one that I broke back out only recently; WWF Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. Only issue was you had to unlock Stone Cold, that was annoying - wanted him from the off!

Yeah, Mass Effect 2 was a huge improvement. I was late to the Mass Effect party, so I played ME2 right after I beat ME1.

It felt and looked so much better.

Granted, ME1 had more exploration, but it wasn't handled too well IMO.

I'll have to disagree there, 2 was just a recruitment mission, ticking boxes to gain loyalty. It also turned into a below average third person shooter, cutting off a lot of RPG elements.

But like I said, the RPG elements in ME1 weren't handled too well. The terrible inventory system in ME1 was changed, and removing the mako exploration improved the pacing in my opinion.

ME2 still had enough RPG elements, since it had cool hubs and ample side-missions.

Keep in mind that I'm someone who loves RPGs like Final Fantasy X, Fable II, and Mass Effect 2/3. Basically, I prefer streamlined RPGs that focus on quality and good pacing over quantity and openness.

But yes, ME1 has the best story of the trilogy, no doubt.

I can't say 2 was quality. Instead of improving on them, they cut them completely or made it bare-minimum. It felt hollow, and the combat was limited to linear cover-based shooting. The side stuff wasn't that interesting. 1 had a lot, but there was some cool, interesting stories to discover. They also made paragon/renegade more black and white, with not a lot of middle ground. The end mission was a disappointment as well, while the in the first it was fantastic. 3 had the best of both.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves - Improved on pretty much everything from Drake's Fortune.
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - More variety in tracks, new vehicles and improved visuals.
Grand Theft Auto III - First open world game that immersed myself with its sights and sounds.
Metroid Fusion - More visually appealing, improved control, story and I like the linear approach.
