    The first PS1 basically had plastic springs that held the CD read head in place, if you had your PS1 over heat or run hot for any length of time, or if your system was just old the springs would start to sag taking the read head out of alignment. Turning it over let gravity pull the read head back into alignment since the springs couldn't or you shipped it back to Sony and they replaced the plastic springs with metal ones and the problem was solved.
