I've seen quite a few people (not just here) complain about the triggers. I'm kind of surprised. As someone who has used an Xbox 360 controller since 2005 I feel right at home.

well I was kidding but I love the setup they have. I've only played on an Xbox once, so using the bottom triggers to aim and shoot and them being curved were freaky to me. but I love it now.

I feel ya. It seems more like a when than if in terms of the triggers growing on people.

Well, I always wanted this on a controller, and the closest thing to it is the Sabertooth gamepad by Razer, but it's not the same, and doesn't feel as good as this would.
I would love to have the L and R 1 buttons moved to the backside of the pad where your middle fingers rest naturally, (see pic 2) and to morph the triggers into having a kind of dual trigger, that feels the same as it does now but you can also lift your finger up to make an input as well as pressing the trigger normally. (see pic 1)
With this button layout, it would add the feeling of lifting up a weapon to ADS, or a quick switch back to your previous weapon. It could even be used as another Y axis for something while you still have full 3d movement with the sticks.

Lifting L2 to ADS and pressing R2 to fire works quite well. You would be surprised how natural it feels.
I know because the Sabertooth mimics that idea in a different way by using a rocker switch on the back of the pad. (see pic 3)
Anyways, not only would it feel more comfortable already having your first finger on L and R2 (triggers) and your middle fingers on L and R 1 (see pic 2)
It would also add 2 more inputs for devs to utilize. Plus the triggers would feel the same even if the up press is not used.

Pic 3. (EDIT) I didnt mean to imply press to shoot of course you would use R2 to shoot. (Lift L2 and press R2.)

Let me know what you think of the idea.

the dual r1 trigger seems pointless to me unless you were using it as a constant button I.e. the r2 l2 triggers for shooting. it would be good to prevent slippage but unless you used it all the time there'd be no point.
however, that is a brilliant idea for the naturally resting middle finger triggers. perfect for shooters as well as input to any other type of game. Someone will run with that. awesome post bro +rep

The dual trigger idea, would work because it would be optional.
Like you said it may help prevent slippage, but it wouldn't feel any different from the way it is now.
Like I said optional, like the six axis is in games. Not mandatory but there if you want it.
    To each is there own.

There is one thing I don't like but maybe it's just more getting used to positioning my fingers to the new scheme. I wish in the back right in the middle, the "V" shape wasn't so pronounced downward. It feels like it bulges too far out and both of my middle fingers kind of bump into each other or just feel cramped up.

That's an odd way of holding it IMO.

Hm? I have small hands and the 360 controller is fine. It doesn't feel overly large in my opinion. Now the original Duke controller on the other hand...
