Security check. It wants to make sure you have the game. Otherwise, I can install all the games I want and play without buying the game, renting it, etc. The PS4 would be dead before EUR got it.

I dont think it fully installs the game, only parts needed. The disk is used to confirm you own said game and not just installed a mates copy to save buying it also. But its mostly due to fact its not fully installed as to why i think.

Yep, it installs the full game onto the hard drive and from my understanding even if you have a disc based game, it loads the data off the hard drive and doesn't load anything off of the disc. All the disc is used for once the game is installed is authentication, other than that it is useless!

Because the alternative is to have an always-online console that checks to make sure the same disc isn't being used over and over again.

If having to have the disc in the console bugs you, go DD for all of your games from now on.

This is what MS was attempting to prevent with an always connected console.

i don't follow, what do you mean by "this"?

Microsoft aim was killing used games. The whole "DD" future crap came later as part of their failed PR campaign.

Yes. You still have to insert the PS3 disk to play the game.

Sounds a lot like PC gaming up to the mid 2000s. Where you had to keep the "play disc" in the drive for it to work. Yes its annoying, especially when you had a huge 200GB hard drive (huge back then) but still had to keep swapping discs to play different games.

    ARGGHH.

I'd go all digital d if the prices were competitive. No more discs then.

Honestly though, it only takes five to ten seconds to swap these discs out. Even with a competitive price, I'd lose the resell value. I couldn't do it in that respect.
