I've seen the videos and there is no bump mapping of the textures used for the race track asphalt. Also, there is self shadowing and cast shadowing. Forza 5 has better self shadowing but it looks like they sacrificed cast shadowing. These characteristics are not affected by video compression, they are just missing from the game. I don't like driving games with ass-end view or even the $#@!pit view. The $#@!pit view limits the field of vision too much plus seeing your own hands with a controller in them and then two game hands turning a steering wheel is too distracting. I like the bumper view where I just see the road ahead of me and there are videos of Forza 5 of that view. Same thing, no bump mapping of the roadway. Just the kid in the crowd yelling "The Emperor is naked!".

Here's Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600....

Incorrect. The next biggest jump was going from the Atari 7800 to the NES.

Resistance wasn't the game to get if you wanted a good looking launch game for the PS3.

Gundam Crossfire and Genji Days of the Blade were.

Hell I played God of War 3 in 2010 and went back to play Genji and even then it still held up pretty well.

Looking at the video there is a jump seen, but how big it is I'd have to say not by much. I'm assuming 5 has D/N cycles so I'll go back to watch again, but from me there isn't that great of a difference.

There is a difference just think of it as going from Iphone 5 to 5s(Yeah I had to take a shot lol).

Think of Forza 5 as the original iPhone and think of their last forza on X1 being iPhone 5s.

That's always going to happen, but as someone said earlier right now for all the hype in the world nothing against PS4 or X1, and I do know these are launch games.

The difference between these two is what I've seen between the 5 and 5s basically there is a difference, but it's so tiny that you'll barely see/notice it.

In about 2 years is when we'll start seeing REAL differences between current-gen and next-gen kind of like when I saw GOW 3 for the first time that to me was when we entered Next-Gen(PS3 and 360 at the time).

it's not tiny either. BF4 for example, while a cross-gen title, looks far better on next-gen consoles. you just gotta play it yourself.

There's very little room for graphical improvement with racers at this point tbh, so yeah I agree. That vid pretty much proved it really, there's a noticeable improvement but the improvement is not so big as to be able to tell it's running on new hardware.

The first thing they can do is improve the AA dramatically.

Not really, when PD posted that video of Real Life vs GT5 on Nürburgring, it pretty much proved that there's very little more they can do besides additional AA, frame rate and resolution (which is what this gen will mostly be about anyway). GT4 was heavily limited by PS2s hardware, resolution, lack of any AA etc.

GT5 gives you the "appearance" of realism, it's actually very bland looking if you look at things individually. it's going to get a lot better. we haven't even gotten realistic looking road textures yet.

nah, PD would be better at it, just that they focused too much on models so they didn't have much else left. GT5 environments look clean and photorealistic but overall bland compared to other racers because they don't spend the resources there.

with the PS4, they should have enough resources to work on the environment details. and i just realized this isn't a GT thread lol.

But uh forza 5 will look like child's play compared to 6 when turn 10 settles down and build something from the ground up without having a console launch deadline to meet

GT5 is just a pretty car show. The physics are still GT3 quality, the AI is still PS2 era level, the environments are bland and FAR FROM PHOTOREALISTIC, unless you think sprite trees and prebaked shadows are something you normally see in photos of real tracks.

You want to see your "photorealism" for real?

Be honest, does the top picture look identical in every way to the bottom one to you? Are you really unable to tell the difference between the game and real life?

The car isn't even right. Not even close, and that's the main thing you're bragging about with the GT series.

Forza 5 is disappointing. A minor upgrade in graphics, but not even matching what current PC games are doing graphically, and no where near PC games in sim accuracy. I still cannot do a simulated Le Mans race with more than 50 cars from 3 different classes (LMP1, LMP2, and GT) on track at the same time, and I've been able to do that on the PC since 2005. Still no dynamic day/night cycles, still lacking proper off-track details, still lacking pit animations, etc...

At least GT5 has pit animations, even if it does look like a PS2 game while doing it.

Forza 6 will have whatever improvements they can make in 2 years to the current game. They are NOT going to build an entire racing sim from the ground up in 2 years, and MS has them on a strict 2 year release cycle between games.

Forza has already turned into the Call of Duty of racing sims. The mandatory 2 year release cycle guarantees that each new version will only have minor improvements and the core game will never change. There simply isn't enough time to change anything major.

before i start, those GT5 shots are $#@!ty lol so i don't get the comparison. you could compare those with GT3 and they'll look worse lol.

secondly, when people say GT5 is photorealistic, it means that it is photorealistic in the 'gaming world' because there's no better comparison so don't take it that seriously.

it's just that it's the closest thing we have to real life (in looks).

also about physics, lol ok dude, that is your opinion, just like IGN has their own opinion about GT5:
