This console gen time period will be shorter

Sony hints that the PS4 lifecycle may be shorter than PS3

    The game has changed

Part two of the big*PS4*launch takes place tonight as the UK will get its hands on Sony's new box – and we can truly fire the starting gun on the next-gen race.

Microsoft says that the*Xbox One*is a 10-year console, but what about the PlayStation 4? We asked Sony UK boss Fergal Gara whether the PS4 is in it for the long stretch.

"I think there's reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK," he said.

"It's probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit."

    Going the distance

However Gara added that it was too early to tell what the future will hold for the unified console, and Sony has every faith that the PS4 will swing big. "We're going to have a much better feel for it once we're a good few months in and we can see how the dynamics are emerging."

But although initial uptake of the PS4 has been fierce, new contenders such on the horizon such as Valve promise to make this a very different generation to the last.

"What we do know is that the uptake [of the PS4] is going to be very sharp," said Gara. "Does that mean this is going to be a much bigger cycle? Maybe. Or it might mean that it's just a bit more compressed into the first few years, that the latter years are a little softer."
I kind of expected this. With the jump to x86 they will probably stay with it for no more backward compatibility issues. They can also produce the console cheaper that way.

I agree, while the consoles will have little tweaks, the fact that it's more PC like and it being much easier to port from PC to consoles with the cost being much cheaper for developers. With all that, they can easily upgrade within 6 years to a better console without such weird technology and price risk invading everything.

This is the way it should have been last gen too IMO. Sure, a few great games came out over the last two years, but that's it. I was bored with PS3/360 by the end of 2011.

So were many others. This was obvious due to the rise in PC gamers at the end of 2011.

Yeah I was figuring about 6yrs. The last gen went on about 2yrs too long.

I remember in 2008 thinking, "These console generations end too quickly!" Now I know what happens when they are out for too long...I'm bored lol. Definitely was doing a lot more PC gaming because of it. Wouldn't mind a shorter time period now.

This would be a welcome change, as long as they don't fall into the Apple rut of releasing just a slightly modified version of their previous tech.

5-6 years is the magic number as I think back when I first got my SNES and the transition to my N64/PS1. Any longer than 6 years is just too much. What's even worse is when kick ass games get released for a system 2 months before the successor launches.

    8 years and counting!

Yeah.....going with x86 instead of less mainstream chips, means much cheaper hardware development cycles. They can afford shorter console generations.

They say this all the time. It always ends up being more or less the same timeframe between gens.

Yeah, I agree. And I would think backward compatibility will be easier.

Hope so. This gen... last gen? was too long. 5 years is the magic number as long as they support the retiring console really well (and we know Sony will). The most important thing is backward compatibility. For the gamers and Sony too. People will feel much better about buying the year 5 PS4 games if they can play them on their PS5's.

I could be wrong but I expect a diminished returns after 3 years. This is a familiar architecture and I think developers will have it maxed out after 3. Some of the best games did come out at the end of the PlayStation 3's life cycle but I think it was because of the architecture of the system and its difficulty to grasp

Sony needed to hang on to the PlayStation 3 even longer than they did because they were finally starting to recoup some money. I think they came out with Playstation 4 just to beat Microsoft.

It also depends on how technology advances, among other things. I also hope to see a five year cycle.

I disagree. Three years? Never. Familiar or not, there are still a lot of things they can learn to do before, and after three years. Look at ND for example. If anyone had a handle on things mid life cycle, it was them. Still, at the end, look at what they were able to do.

it's possible to do smaller cycles, it will just mean lesser jumps between the generations. either way you know.

Continuing to use what is essentially customised (last gen) PC hardware will gimp the consoles life cycles.

i think it's a positive. they are able to extract the power much earlier and it's super cheap to make, and super power efficient. what's there not to like?

+ if they can get BC now, it will just be so much better. i wish i could get rid of my PS3 but i can't. i would've easily bought the PS4 at launch.
