Pretty staggering figures from the U.K. - congratulations, Sony! Everyone's gotta be mindful that these figures would be exponentially bigger if more stock had been allotted. The PS4 is like gold dust at the moment, pure and simple. If you want one right now many retailers will quote you with a February window at best. At least that's what it's like in Ireland. As far as I remember we've got the highest pre-order-to-populace ratio in the world. I'd love to have seen the figures if there was enough stock to fulfill demand. But even still it's mightily impressive and a stunning start. Onwards and upwards!

Maths is biased! It keeps telling me the PS4 is 50% more powerful than XboxOne!

I'll tell you a bit about the UK gaming market. It's the third largest market in the world with around 33 million gamers (across all platforms and pervasive devices). That's 50% of the entire population! In 2012 the market was worth $5.2bn and is larger than the rest of Europe gaming countries put together! It's of vital importance as part of a global strategy and Sony have just kicked the ball right out of the park. Selling a quarter of a million of anything in the UK on day one is a staggering achievement. Right now you could sell your first born for a PS4 in the UK and still not get one - they are like Rocking Horse $#@! - no where to be found.

The key now is to maintain momentum and Sony need to do that through ensuring the games are fairly priced in the PSN and that we are not lagging behind the US for too long in new features and enhancements to the dashboard, etc. UK gamers will spend a fortune on game titles with 33% spending money on games (almost double that of European average). Make them the right price and you will sell millions of them.

This is a phenomenally strong start from Sony and after spending a weekend with the PS4 I can completely understand why.

Oh, and the Xbox One 50Hz versus 60Hz refresh rate issue is not going to help their cause at all!

$#@!ing excellent. No ifs, ands, or buts. A wonderful milestone in such a short period of time for a population almost 1/6th the size of the United States.

Knack is an OK game and all, but to outsell Mario is a real shocker.

Not to me. Only because it was being sold as a launch title.

Launch time is the best time to sell a new IP, because there's less competition, and there will be a huge number of buyers in one go.

Very true. I never really looked at like that. The only reason I bought it is because I had a $20 coupon towards the game. My son enjoys it more then I do, so it was well worth it.

Would love to see some Mario quality on my PS4. The guess the closest we'll get is a Media Molecule game.
This is going to be a tough generation for Microsoft, you watch that money fly.

not sure what the Australian numbers are but in comparison to the UK I would say at least 60,000 Australians are playing PS4 I predict and maybe 35,000 New Zealanders give or take... PS3 sold 35,000 units in 4 days in Australia alone mind you apparently Sony only shipped around 40,000 units at launch... apparently.

within 1 year Wii back in the day sold 1.5 million alone in Australia which was a tremendous achievement for a country that has 27,000,000 people with around 5 million visitors and 200,000 illegal immigrants

I would bet that at least 1 and a half million units got shipped to Europe... I don't think any more units could be produced in time.... my Australian PS4 was manufactured in August and most American PS4 units were manufactured between August/September/october so I would dare say most units are from the same batch overall batch just different stickers, boxes etc.

I would say there would definitely be 3 million units sold by XMAS time no doubt, my friend can't even get a PS4 this year, Australia had no walk in units for launch... just pre-orders even though I've seen about 16 playable PS4 display units in stores, walk in stock is not expected until february 2014... but even then sony is working round the clock to replenish america/europe stock and getting ready to produce as many units as possible for the japanese launch.

2014 is the slog year for the PS4
