    PS4 PVR (Elgato)

Ok so two questions one of which extremely PS4 related, the other; not so.
They're both linked though so I thought this would be the most appropriate place to post so here goes:

Been asked what I wanted for Christmas and I just asked for some stuff for my PS4, family knows about my interest of wanting to start up a YouTube channel but I've never really dedicated a wage packet to getting the required kit.
So its been suggested they're going to get me an Elgato Game Capture HD.
Upon doing abit of searching I found one at Amazon at around 130 (is this a good price or are they cheaper elsewhere? A trusted and reliable retailer, of course.)
I then did a little more searching and apparently due to an encryption in the HDMI the PS4 does not as of yet support the Elgato until a patch which is most certainly (according to most) being delivered to us by Sony
Question is, does anyone know when this update is expected to hit our systems? I don't really want to get bought something like that and it just be a useless bit of kit sat in my room.

Second unrelated question would be is the Elgato a stand-out choice? Or is there, of similar pricing a competitor that is equal, if not better?
Main criteria for me is HD recording and upload capability, possibly an editing tool and preferably something that records my own voice in-game as well as the lobbies.
Yet again thanks for your time guys.

Right now, there isn't any date projected for the release that removes the HDCP restrictions.

Elgato, for that price, is decent. The other option that is an easy external, with a decent price, would be the Hauppauge HD PVR 2, or the Pro version.

    Hauppauge options:

    HD PVR 2
    HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition
    HD PVR 2 GE Plus

You can compare each of those to your needs, features, etc.

Here is a list of models from Blackmagic Design: LINK

Thanks for the compliment. It means a lot, it really does.

I personally use the Elgato primarily because my HD PVR is the original, and it doesn't work on a mac. However, I wouldn't have any reason to go back to the Hauppauge brand right now. My Elgato works really well, and the software is easy to use, and loaded with features. It has everything you've listed as a need/want.

The only wrench in the gears, right now, is the HDCP problem with the PS4. There have been a handful of people using HDMI splitters, or video converters, to use the Elgato + PS4 just fine. I just haven't been able to get it working.

I was going to say I've seen gameplays etc quite obviously recorded through some kind of game capture so that had me really confused when I read it wasn't possible.
What are the features of Elgato in terms of voice chat? Does it record yours in game and the lobbies or is that the one where (I once read) you have to record your in-game voice seperately and insert it into the video (thus having to remember when and where you said what you did in the second recording)

It can record separate from the game audio...

You have the option for an external mic, or as you can see, an internal mic. It doesn't capture the voice chat that comes through a headset/earpiece.

So the way to do it would be to play with my headset for ingame chat and then to have an additonal microphone rigged up to the software?

yep. If you don't have an internal one.. like on a laptop, iMac, etc. Just USB one into the PC, and you're golden.

I've been contemplating doing this myself as well though it seems there's something similar here in the UK but it's an import: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Converter-SP...hdmi+converter

It has the same code and the box looks exactly the same so there's most likely a manufacturer making these for other companies. Obviously I've never tried it so I can't comment.

Here is the PVR I am getting tomorrow.

    Hauppauge HD PVR Rocket
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hd-pvr-r...cket&cp=1&lp=1

This bad boy does not need a separate power source as it uses a USB cable to power up. You do not need to use a computer to record footage either. You can insert a USB thumb drive and record to that. Then use the PC to edit and upload when you are done.

So both Sony and MS were smart to include the built-in streaming technology.

Meh.. Xbox One doesn't have any streaming options. You can capture a short video and then share it, but you can't stream.

yet you mean right? fairly sure i read that they both could stream, just that Xbox One captures a smaller chunk at any point.

Xbox One can record but cannot stream. They have a deal with Twitch but it hasn't been added yet.

right that's what i meant. I heard that the stream feature wasn't going to be there at launch but it will be there in the future.

i can certainly understand the importance of it. at first i was a little against it but i think this will bring in a lot of new users and also good for users to see if they like the game or find new games they didn't know of. it's like free publicity all around.
