Planetside 2 graphics same as PC

Of the many free to play multiplayer titles arriving on the PlayStation 4, Sony Online Entertainment’s PlanetSide 2 has to be the biggest deal. After the success and rave reviews on PC, it marks an opportunity for console gamers to see what the fuss is about. How will the PC version differ from the PlayStation 4 version in terms of visuals, and has there been an improved level of performance thanks to the latter’s friendlier architecture? We spoke to executive producer Clint Worley to find out.

“Based on the PS4 hardware, we are targeting visuals that are on par with a high end PC gaming setup. PlanetSide 2 already looks amazing and being able to use all of the PS4 tech to crank up the details will really impress our players.”

Will there be any new content on the PS4 version to motivate PC players to pick it up? “One of the core decisions we made up front was to have the PS4 and the PC versions be as close as possible so that all players receive the same experience. That means that new content, balance changes and bug fixes will be addressed on both platforms. We do plan to take advantage of the features that come with the PS4 to enhance the experience, such as the DualShock 4 peripheral.”

He also explained the motivation behind bringing PlanetSide 2 to the PS4: “As players have been asking for PlanetSide 2 to be playable on the console, we wanted to open the door and invite them into the PlanetSide 2 universe. With the PS4 hardware, we can offer amazing graphics that rival a high end gaming PC without compromising the gameplay or social structures that are critical to PlanetSide 2; it is the ideal platform to showcase the game’s beauty and massive open world combat,” he added.

PlanetSide 2 is expected to arrive on the PS4 later this year however there has been no confirmation yet. Do you plan to pick up the PS4 version of PlanetSide 2? Let us know in the comments section below.

    PS2 is nice looking game.

To be honest...from what I remember of PS2 on PC...I'm not surprised that the PS4 can pull it off.

I would be really, really surprised if they couldn't pull this off. Without any OC my GTX 580, from 2010, plays PS2 at 1080p, ultra settings, between 40 and 60 fps. OC'd it's over 60.

Should be very easy then. It's awesome this thing is producing quality graphics this early, things will only get better.

Haha, just installed PS2 on my 780 system and without SLI, I'm getting between 140fps and 200+fps at 1080p with ultra settings. At 4K I get between 80 and 110+. If the developers can't hit 60fps at 1080p at PC ultra equivalent settings on the PS4, then there would have to be some bottleneck in the dev tools or something, because this is not a hardware demanding game at all.

The devs recently rolled out a few performance patches to increase performance. Its over 10,000 words so forgive me for not copy pasta.

Not really relevant though. Planetside 2 on the PC has a RECOMMENDED video card of an ATI HD6870. That video GPU was released in 2010. That GPU is 4 years old now, and that's what their "High end PC" system is based on.

The performance patch on PC was basically the result of console optimization I believe. Better multicore performance and general physics and multi threading efficiency increases to use all those cores on the ps4

As sneezymarble elaborated on, a 580 (which is a weaker GPU than ps4 on paper) can pull off ultra settings @1080p60 so I definitely expect them to reach it on ps4. However this game is quite intensive on CPU as well afaik

I put my GTX580 in my old Q6600 system last night. Tomorrow I'll install PS2 and let you know how it goes on that system (with everything in it but the video card being from 2006/2007!). If I can pull down 1080p60fps on a 2007 CPU/MOBO/RAM combo with a 2010 video card at the highest settings, all at default clocks, then unless the PS4 port is being developed by monkeys, the PS4 will hit those settings with no problem at all. Again, this shouldn't be news to anyone who's played PS2. It's not a demanding game, really.

Planning on playing as the New conglomerate. Its a awesome game. PC version has 2000 players per continent. So basically 6000 players, 8000 when the new Hossin continent comes out.

One thing I wonder about is how the PlayStation will get PhysX? Its Nvidia only, and PS4 uses a AMD GPU. I've heard about Mantel but I don't get it, really.

For starters they they were released Quarter 4 2010.
It is very relevant. Many users struggled with much higher GPUs than that to sustain 60 FPS at 1080p, it was more about the CPU than the GPU hence why they have done what they have done.
AMD users suffered the most since they are not as efficient as Intel. I have a 6870 and before the patches on my AMD system clocked to 3.7 I could not run the game on Ultra at more than 30FPS, but now with the patches and using Intel there is no problem what so ever.

Played a little PS2 on my Q6600 system. Haven't played at default clocks yet. The 580 is OC'd to 850MHz and the CPU is at 3.6GHz, with the RAM (DDR2, mind you) at default clocks (DDR2 800, 4x2GB).

Ultra settings, maximum possible view distance, 1080p. I'm getting pretty consistent fps over 60 with drops into the 50s when there's a lot going on and/or when I'm indoors (not sure why being indoors drops the fps into the 50s). Outdoors, even with a fair amount of movement going on the fps typically stays above 60, often in the 70s, and sometimes in the high 80s.

All in all, not bad for a system using a CPU from January 2007, 10 year old RAM system, and a GPU from late 2010. Even more impressive when you consider the overhead from running Windows 8.1, browsers open, music streaming/playing in the background via Plex, and two remote desktop sessions running.

I think it's a pretty slick looking game for its scale, but, yeah, it's not the best looking game out there.

WRT physx, there's nothing super sophisticated going on physics wise, as far as I can tell. I don't see why they couldn't just offload the physics processing to a core or two and be fine.

They have, its called Tress FX but so far it only does hair in Tomb Raider.

The devs removed physX capabilities whilst they are doing the performance tweaking.

The PysX stuff starts about 1:15
