What’s The Right Price Point for ‘Playstation Now’?

    http://www.dualshockers.com/2014/01/...aystation-now/

Sony revealed ‘Playstation Now‘ during CES 2014. The service will let gamers play games from Sony’s library on their Sony consoles as well as on tablets, smartphones and televisions. You’ll be able to get games either by renting individual titles or via a subscription which will give you access to many titles. Sounds pretty cool right? Yeah it does, the question is (as the title of this editorial asks), what’s the right price point for this service? Before I get into it, I should say that, yep, you’re gonna have to pay for this.“Buh-buh-but I have Playstation Plus! I should get this for free!”Sorry buddy, it doesn’t work like that. This service is being provided by Gaikai, a company Sony paid millions to buy. You really think that they’re just going to add this as part of PS+? NOPE. You’re going to have to pay for this separately. This is something you’ll just have to accept. With that said, how much WILL this cost? Let’s speculate shall we?People are already used to subscribing to services like Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll. These services usually come out to be around $8-$12 or so. This would be the ideal model to use forPlaystation Now. That isn’t exactly a lot of money to pay a month. Sony could also charge people around $50-$60 for a yearly subscription. That would be less than you’d pay monthly. It might be a good idea to keep it to $50 since that’s also the same price of Playstation Plus. Now that’s the IDEAL situation. The other scenario that could happen would be if this was a tiered service. For example, Playstation 2 games could cost you $10 a month while Playstation 3 games could be $20. For $30 you might be able to get Sony’s complete back catalog. Now, $30 a month sounds expensive, but considering that you’d be getting the entirety of the PS library to play on your Playstation consoles, TVs, tablets and smartphones, asking for $30 a month doesn’t seem that unreasonable. We don’t know what the actual price of this service will be but it would be in Sony’s favor to keep it reasonably affordable. If it costs too much money then people will stay away from it. Sony needs to find that sweet spot where they can get the most amount of people to subscribe to this service while netting themselves a nice profit.

Despite what the article says I'm confident it will come with Playstation Plus it doesn't make any sense to charge people extra to play games they probably already have. So far 4.2 million ps4s have been sold multiply that by $50 $210 million. Sony pretty much has Gakai paid off and it hasn't been a year yet it hasn't even been 4 months.
"I think all those developers who are saying, "We don’t want to do a PS3 game," or "It’s really difficult to do it," should shut up and make their games. If you have time to complain about it, then you should be spending your time working on getting the most from the hardware."

I can see them doing something like this:

    Plus: $50/year
    Now: $50/year
    Plus+Now: $80/year

I would say the maximum for me would be Ł50 a year as long as that's for any amount of games with no cap, will be interesting to see what they will eventually price it at....

True, but it's not just the games your paying for, it's the ability to play PS1, 2, and 3 games on Vita, PS3, Ps4, tablets, PC's, Sony TV's and eventually non Sony products as well.
You think playing a PS3 game on a TV without a console or PC will be free? I myself don't think so.
Maybe it's $5 to $10 more a month for PS plus users, and $30 a year for anyone else.
I could even see it something like $50 a year for non Sony products.
Either way free is not likely IMO.

I agree. there´s no way that this is free with PS+.
will have to see what they want to charge 1st. Might just rent a few games rather than go with the subscription service.

I think giving free access to Playstation Plus PS4 users would be ideal, and since they're saying you can access through so many devices they're the ones that should get the charge. And if us PS Plus PS4 users do get to pay an extra fee for it, the most I would be willing to pay is $100 for a year subscription of both PS Plus and PS Now.

I think there could very well be NO subscription cost. As I posted in the other ps now thread, the ps now faq stated the following:
    How much?
No prices are available yet however you will have the option of renting, subscribing and even purchasing games.
If subscription was the only way to acquire this service, it wouldn't be listed as an option along side renting or buying games.

This leads me to believe there is no hardset sub fee, and it's your choice which way you want to go. And just like I said in the other thread, I don't think it'll be tied to ps+. Anyone that wants to use this service direct to their tv or tablet that doesn't own a ps4 or vita would be screwed if not. Why would they want to pay for a ps+ service they can't benefit from just to get ps now? It would essentially make ps+ a paywall for non-ps4/vita owners...and sony has been pretty good about keeping features outside of pay walls.

Now as to the pricing? I have no earthly idea. I could see them bundling with a tiered pricing option with the following services though
    -ps now
    -music unlimited
    -movies unlimited?

I'm sure it will be monthly. Maybe 10-15 without plus may 5-8 a month with plus.

I think something around $20 would be fine considering it's new and it won't have a whole lotta games....and since they will be older games and available elsewhere.

If they end up having a lot of games....then heck I dunno....they have to compete with retail and amazon type sites....so I don't think they would want to price it too high.

I wouldn't be opposed to that. Especially since it should have a full backlog of content. I just want to know how it will handle games you already own.

I could see this happening and I would definitely be interested in it at that price! Even if you have to pay $50 a year, that is still cheaper than purchasing 1 physical game per year, especially if it has games like GTA5, etc. on there!

It's will be very interesting to see what price they come up with. This is network services on an entirely different scale to what is available elsewhere at the moment. PSN doesn't have the burden of having to deal directly with Latencies as much or having as much server side processing needs per user, it could cost a lot to the end user but that only depends on how they have the backend setup, could also be exceptionally reasonable.
