Microsoft: The days of single-purpose consoles are over..

Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello says, "The future is a multi-tasking customer--a device that does more than just gaming at home."

The notion that a console would only play games is a thing of the past, Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello said this week during a CES 2014 panel in Las Vegas.

"From a console perspective, the idea that a console is a single-purpose device is the past," Penello said (via Xbox Wire). "The future is a multi-tasking customer--a device that does more than just gaming at home."
Of course, Penello is in the business of selling the Xbox One, which Microsoft describes as an "all-in-one" device that not only plays games but affords users a multitude of non-gaming entertainment options.

The 3 million Xbox One owners have taken to such non-gaming services quickly, as Microsoft reported this week that users have already spent "millions" of hours watching live TV through the console and spent "millions" more hours using various apps.

This is hardly surprising, as Microsoft announced in March 2012 that Xbox 360 owners in the United States spend more time with Xbox Live entertainment applications than they do playing multiplayer games over the service.

The reason why people have spent millions of hours watching TV through the Xbox One is because you are forced to turn the XB1 on if you want to use the console as a pass through. I only do this because it frees up an HDMI port on my TV.

What the consumer wants is an entertainment supercomputer. You should work two jobs to get one and it will instill discipline. When it does game, though, it had better be in the fourth dimension.

For multiple purposes Id rather use my desktop. Better multitasking, better performance, unlimited processing tasks.
In my opinion consoles are supposed to emerge you into gaming with comfort.

Only things I want in a console are:

DLNA Support - I used this nearly daily on PS3,
    Gaming,
Ingame browser to make collecting that much easier,
+some other small tidbits to make my life easier (Data Management screen, love being able to tell what addons I got installed for games, etc.)

So far neither console does everything I want or need.

Completely agree with you. Merica is responsible ( As usual ) this outcome. I mean, come on, ordering pizza from your console? this is madness

Yeah multi purpose that doesn't sacrifice it's main purpose is the future. But not when the multi purpose invades the gaming. Try again MS. Not fooling me.

I get the direction but there are countries that doesn't haven't any cable providers or limited. So it's nice to have all the gimmicks in one machine but not everyone has cable. 2 not everybody likes kinect. so you bring people a generation that is either good or bad for them. it's about a 50/50 yes and no's I see with people. They either like it or they don't.

It would have been disastrous for Kinect.
15+ years ago most consoles lived in kids bedrooms, PS2 changed that with its DVD function, I bet it was alot of peoples first and only DVD player for a few years while they dropped in price.

Most new TV have DLNA support these days so its not really needed in a console.

Well, that is the entire point, isn't it? Having to turn on the XB1 to be able to switch between TV and it's various functions....otherwise why would you connect your TV to the XB1 as a passthrough?

There are other devices that do that (allowing you to free up an HDMI port.)

I do not like my Xbox needing to be on while I watch TV. I am not very fond of my console running all day while watching shows. And the damn Xbox commercials are constantly triggering voice commands on my console. I hope Microsoft puts out an update that allow me to put my console in some sort of sleep mode while watching TV.

I understand that part...I just don't understand why you would connect it in the first place if you don't plan on using the XB1 functions at all -- the reason XB1 needs to be running (there are other devices you could use to free up an HDMI port.)

If you do plan on using XB1 TV features occassionally, then sure, that update you want will fix it and I can somewhat understand...

Multi-purpose consoles are always welcomed as long as the main focus is on gaming.

I don't really care about "focus" stereotyping. If the games are what suits me, then it doesn't matter what the focus is.

now that goes deeper than that. even if MS had the same focus or slightly more, i would still go with Sony because they still didn't focus their OS on extra stuff. they more like added on to them. so the RAM isn't being wasted as much for other functions. also important.

Isnt the RAM available to developers 4.5GB on PS4 and 5GB on X1 right now? Of course that situation will improve for both consoles.

it is important what that RAM is being used for. On the X1, it makes complete sense that they have additional things put into that RAM because it uses apps as an alternative.

so PS4 may have everything running in the background when it starts, whereas X1 has TV/Kinect stuff running too and so it doesn't have memory for additional services, which is why they're then run afterwards and can be closed off (or are closed off when you open up other apps).

a guy told me today that he has to clear out his console's cache every once in a while by pressing the power button. i don't know what he meant by it but what i thought he likely meant was that he is completely shutting off the console this way, in other words, removing the app cache that is in the RAM.

you wouldn't need to do that on the PS4 because it's always running services, you can't turn them off.

point being, PS4 isn't using anything (that we know so far) for non-gaming purposes. you can say that streaming is not about gaming and resume too...but at least it's closely related. Kinect is closely related but you can't use it in every game and i assume streaming is more popular with gamers than kinect is.
