    Slow computer

I plan on upgrading my computer but dont have the funds to go all the way at the moment but right now my computer is incredibly slow and not worth even using. I was wondering if maybe I just need more ram. How can i breeze though programs and surf the web?

This is what im working with..

    AMD athlon 64 processor 3200+ 2.01 Ghz

    2 GB of ram.

That processor is terrible, but it's still 'OK' for basic web browsing. Newer programs will generally work slowly on it. We can't know it's an issue of RAM unless we know how much of it you're ever using. What is your OS, and what is your web browser? Does it run normal at first then get slower over time?

That sounds like a DDR system. Ugh. 10 year old computer.

Shoot, when Kaveri comes out grab that to start.
    Next month is hard launch.
AMD A10 7850k , motherboard and 8gb of RAM shouldn't be too harsh.
    What's the budget?

The onboard is 'adequate' for basic stuff. Add the other GPU if your going hardcore gaming.
Your web browsing experience and everything else in general will be so much snappier after the upgrade.

Download and run the free trial of this program. It will clean up your registry and repair and clean everything else on your PC.

I'm using windows 7 and stuff like utorrent the dl speed is fast but clicking and right clicking on different folders is a slow process. Surfing the Web alone is slow. The computer wasn't like that when I had xp on it. I'm using Googl. Chrome to surf the Web.

Could I recommend in you buying a tablet if you don't use your PC for games.

ccleaner would do some good as far as cleaning a lot of stuff up.

I was using an Athlon 64 3000+ for a while. That was back in 2005!!

I upgraded that in 2006 to the FX-55!!! Seven years later, I went full blown and bought basically a whole new setup lol.

    i7 4770
    16GB RAM
Replaced an nVidia 460 with the GTX770 that is in there now. All done in July.

Yes, CCleaner would help. Honestly it'd be better to just buy a new PC though. You can get an APU build for about 300$. The performance difference from what you have to that will blow your mind.

Realistically, cleaning the registry isn't going to bring any measurable performance increase. I'd use ccleaner to clear caches of data, etc. Also, check to see if that thing has been defragmented.

It's a single core cpu, and yes, it's going to run sluggish outside of Win XP no matter what housecleaning you do.

System Mechanic cleans and fixes more than just the registry. When I was working at a local computer store 7 years ago, this little tool helped out tremendously. It fixes so many issues. Repairs HDD, notifies you when it is time to defrag. Cleans out old registries, fixes current registries. It will also provide a list of running programs that you can turn off during start up.

That's just an awful lot of money for things you can do yourself.

    ccleaner for clearing files, registry...
msconfig at Run dialogue for getting rid of startup programs
    disk defrag built into windows
use chkdsk via command line to find and fix problems.

That's what that program is doing.

Ive made the decision to get a Ipad theres no use to rebuild when I have a dated laptop that works. My slow computer is just a backup I store files on and editing will take a bit longer but it will due.

You could put a linux distro or say pcbsd on it, those specs are fine. My laptop is 2.2ghz celeron and it's blazingly fast, I've only got 2 gigs of ram and I've never filled it once.

Best thing to make it fast is back up all the important files you need and nuke it and put a fresh copy of windows on it it's 1 full process that will work and you know all the crap is gone, just make sure you download all the latest drivers for your hardware and you should be fine. Download CPU-Z and see what model your motherboard is and I bet you could get a AMD Dual Core X2 CPU which wouldn't cost much and give you an extra to offload all the process if the funds are really short, heck you could find a used AMD X2 AM2+ CPU and board plus some DDR2 ram on ebay for cheap and sell your parts you replace.

But when I come across a PC that needs some serious repair I just wipe it all and a fresh copy does it
