I'm not certain, but I was pretty sure that at least part of this arrangement is illegal or something.

Edit: Beaten by a mile. Didn't know it had to do with the FCC though, (makes sense). Sheesh.

When I didn't know about the non disclosure nature of the agreement, it was no different than regular advertising. Now I think its a very desperate and cheap move that has made MS fall further from grace in my eyes

You're saying that with the assumption that pretending to like a product/support a product is the same as acting in a commercial to support a product.

If you're already into gaming and you are being paid to support something over the other -- it's just a plus, specially if you already like said product. Otherwise, you are pretending to like a product, not necessarily paid to act as a character who would like said product.

There is a difference but I see your point.

FTC states it is... I wonder who is the authority in such matter...? But who really cares in the end, sheeps will be herded and the others will make their own judgment.

I haven't seen anything from the FTC saying that Microsoft is doing something illegal with their advertising through youtube.

I think what you have to do is file a complain then they investigate then say yay or neigh if its unfair business practice, we have a similar thing in the UK OFCOM I think it is.

I said earlier that I had no issue with this but with thethe NDA regarding the partnership coming to light, it's BS and slimy as hell and I'm not surprised the net is blowing up over this.

Anyone seen these 'leaked' agreements? I agree that any NDA would be norty norty very norty, but so far I haven't seen this so called leaked agreement.

Hearsay, followed by conjecture, more rumour, hearsay, and then represented as fact - doesn't actually make it a fact.

    Let's see the agreement!

    Have located the agreement here

Agree now that this is very underhanded. I didn't have a problem with what was described in the OP. Nothing wrong with that one little bit.

However, preventing any negative comments and then prohibiting people from mentioning the agreement is a very different ball game and is shameful practice by MS!

But yeah, you can't have a go at a company for wanting to make money. They're *ALL* doing that.

However, I don't like the concept of monopolies and this quest, to "control" everything. It's one thing to have fingers in a lot of pies, but I don't like it when they seem to try and kill competition.
To correct that, I should have said that "Microsoft's main goal it to make money and to dominate whatever market they are making money in."

I shouldn't have said their main purpose is to dominate as their entire goal, it's to make money and to dominate that market they are in.

You know what would make this thread better…no wait, this forum better? If everyone was required to state in their sig (especially me, of course, duh) that “consoles are serious business.”

$10 says (yes I'm cheap) it will make everything much better.

To answer those people who does not understand, not paying too much attention or just being apologist for MS, this is not marketing, sponsorship or advertisement.

Just to be clear, this is a huge NO NO from eyes of consumerism. Anyone who understands consumer economics or just basic economics knows why this is so.

You are secretly paying someone to give positive review so that particular reviewer can maintain illusion of unbiased and independent view.

This is why we have transparency laws. Consumerism is pretty low on their radar, but this is plain dirty business.

Different story when paying someone secretly to say positive thing.

Not really about console in particular. It is just consumerism. I believe there is even TED talk about dirty consumerism very similar to this. It was report of companies' dirty tactics. No one even had to mention why it was bad. I thought it was obvious why anti consumerism dealings are bad. Never imagined people thought it was ok...

The changed title is completely misleading. There is a huge difference between regular good old sponsorship and dirty pay behind the scene so you look like this is independent view.

Actually, the above post is completely wrong.

They aren't paying for positive reviews. They are paying for the person to say that they are using the Xbox One to play a game. Completely different.
