    The Order 1886 runs with 4xMSAA 1920x800 (dev: 1080p no AA is cheaper but we want IQ)



    I would MUCH rather have 1920x800 with MSAA that 1080p with no AA

    imo, it sounds like they have things tweaked to run at 1920x800, but they're trying to "sell" the inclusion of the cinematic\performance saving black lines as "well, if we don't do this then no 4xMSAA for you!".

    Yeah I never bought that black lines for cinematic effect bs. Your explanation sounds alot more logical. I'd rather do without the letterbox myself. It would be annoying to play with those black lines. I'm becoming less excited about this game already.

    I think Sony just doesnt want the bad press and PR of having any of their games in 720p after all the fuss and PR about the resolution differences between X1 games and PS4 games so theyre going to do this instead. Obviously the PS4 cant run this game with 4x AA and still be 1080p.

    The good thing is because of the aspect ratio we'll get the same IQ as 1080p so we're not lossing any details because it isn't being upscaled to fill the screen, the cinematic effect is just a good way to explain it as most movies are presented in 1980x1080p when they are really 1980x800, but same definition is there because it is still native.

    Hm, that is true. A stretched screen or letterbox isn't preferable.

    Instead of this: 1920 * 800 = 1,536,000 pixels, which is some weird 16:6.66 aspect ratio.

    Why not this?
    1664 * 936 = 1,557,504 pixels. An odd resolution, but it has as much pixel detail as the above while maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio.

    Problem solved.

    That would require upscaling to 1080p, detail would sacrificed
    The 1920x800 with a letterbox maintains detail of a 1080p picture, just with boarders like you see in blu-rays.
    Don't get me wrong I'd prefer a full screen experience just as much as the next gamer, but not if the other options requires no upscaling and is presented in a way I'm use to.

    We could have something like 1080p with 2xMSAA + post process AA but I'm pretty sure 800p + 4xMSAA will result in a cleaner image due to 1:1 pixel mapping and the raw AA from MS.

    Furthermore you have to consider that they specifically made their engine to not have deferred rendering because they wanted to use MSAA from the start. A RAD employee posts on gaf, he spoke about how the team are big on MSAA believers, so if they just ended up using 2xMSAA, the end gains wont be as worth it

    The developer is reiterating that the bars are an artistic choice and not a performance choice so I dont know. I just want to see this gameplay reveal. lol

    Wouldn't it require upscaling though? I think we're talking about a black frame all around the picture. It would not look good in 1:1 and upscaling would lessen the quality, like you said.

    Edit: I'm down with 1920x800p@30fps. Looking at screens and their vision for Second Son, I'm very excited for the game.

    Yes, this is what people are already doing but its not the same, the reason we don't like sub-hd or sub-1080p games is because no matter what the game gets upscaled and detailed is lost, this however is different as it maintains the full horizontal frame and it doesn't try to make up the 280 additional pixels by stretching the vertical frame
    So the game will look as good as a 1080p native res game with 4xMSAA but viewed in 2:40 cinescope
    Which if it is for artistic reasons will give the game a super wide screen aspect, some movies use this aspect but don't use it for artistic reasons which is pointless, but when they do and I'm sure anyone here can name a film that does, it's good
    Remember when RE4 got it's 16:9 option, it added to the experience
    But like I said, it depends on if they are just removing 280 lines for no reason or the game has some stunning wide presentations to be seen when playing, I hope its the latter cuz I hate pointless 2:40 ratios
    I rather have the IMAX version

    i don't see the problem. Valkyria chronicles was heavily influenced by its art. iirc, the borders were all white to resemble a canvas.

    If the image quality is THAT good, im down for 1920x800. It's only SP, so the experience should come first. From the screenshots, they seem to have an atmosphere that will compliment this design choice.

    And like they say, 1920x800 4xMSAA is more demanding than 1920x1080p NoAA.....clearly its a design choice.

    I also don't see the problem. there is no loss in quality...it's not gunna be upscaled. it will look the same as it would in 1080p (with the letterbox of course) :/
