But this is not about Sony.

Lets keep this thread on topic please. Sony has nothing to do with this thread.

MS now has 16 billion dollar businesses racking in money, xbox being one of them. In 2010 they had only 8 billion dollar businesses. You see how ridiculous that sounds; they only had 8 billion dollar businesses. Point being they wouldn't get rid of a product when it's bringing in a billion dollars in revenue, no matter how small it relates to them overall.

The surface is also already is or about to be a billion dollar business considering it just pulled in $893 million just for the quarter. So people here are actually saying they should get rid of two billion dollar businesses (suface and xbox) when companies would love to have them. Them being insignificant inside the MS family in terms of money only goes to show the scale of MS because in the end we're talking about about two billion dollar businesses.

Another reason this won't happen is because it makes them a safe company. Google making over 90% of their profits from advertising and I believe Apple makes their $#@! ton of money from only 3 products while MS sits at 16 products. If they can figure out the consumer segment like Apple they can $#@!ing grow like crazy.

Bing. Never has made them money but it's an important product for them. Not interested into going into detail but you can look at Bing just like you can look at Google+, it ties there products together in some way. It's used deep in xbox, Windows 8, and WP about to power Cortana. Without Bing they would probably be using Google for all of that and we all know that they'd rather die.

Sorry Lethal, just saw your post - <snip>

Same with Xbox - except it wouldn't be MS itself caving - it would be it getting sold or its own entity. I think Xbox can do fine on its own on its current brand power.

It won't happen. If anything the Windows brand will get more attention while the Xbox will have less attention but plenty in terms of continuing this generation.

They lost a lot on Windows income because Windows 8 hasn't taken to well with the consumer and most are still sticking to XP as long as they can with Vista being recently surpassed by Windows 7 a few weeks back, with Windows 9 coming end of year it could be a loss or a gain

aye, windows 8 though was just a flat out dumb launch. I hope windows 9 is completely different to what windows 8 was and is.

I kind of hope they sell off Xbox.... Hell I hope those working for Xbox pools their money and buys it. Microsoft has turned in to a top heavy corporation that stifles innovation and risk taking. Don't believe me? Look at windows 8 and the fact that they market a gaming console as a TV remote. Xbox would do better as its own company without having to answer to the Microsoft board.

I agree. For them, it may not be worth their time, effort and money for that tiny of a return. Again, you are suppose to run a business where you specialize in one sector or area.

Sony has this issues too. They branched out too much that they are losing their core strength. Hence, the new CEO selling off divisions.

Really is simple business concept. Focus on what you good at.

Thats why its good to have multiple players in the console market. If you don't like what they do or what they offer, go buy the competition's product.

Actually, it doesn't because they are making money according on it. Maybe bing would be a better argument.

According to that graph Xbox barely makes anything at all especially when compared to their other divisions.

Barely making is better than losing any day, and that chart is by the billions. Entertainment isn't gonna make more than the other divisions anyway.

You have to put it in perspective though, they make billions upon billions.
Those xbox figures are numbers Sony would love to have, so yeah compared to themselves, software is money for nothing, compared to hardware and others dealing in similar hardware, they are good figures.

Seems like the only way you guys can spin this is to keep dragging Sony into it. But Sony this and Sony that. Lmao.

Whether another company would love to have these sales numbers is irrelevant. Please keep this discussion about Microsoft only.

What you did was try to downplay what that chart was showing. spinning it to try to make it sound good.

Dude, how can anyone downplay the chart? If you look at where they started and where they are now, it's quite an accomplishment. All the chart shows is that they are doing pretty good in all divisions expect online. Its not like Bing is gonna bring down the whole company.

How are they stifling innovation? Better yet name me some things you see as innovative in the tech field.

    Risk taking?
Windows 8 is not a risk?
Xbox One is not a risk?

Yes the billions it makes pales in comparison to the billions other divisions makes.
Oh noes, what a failure they have on their hands.

    Forget Sony.

You can't name me one company that wouldn't want to own the pathetic billion dollar xbox division.

    What a problem to have...

How is giving you a fact spinning?

That chart goes by the billions.

    Someone pointed that out.

Other than coming from you, where is the spin?

    Not really no.

It has been reported that they are trying it out this year - whether it's true or not sure. But hindsight is 20/20 - if it does prove to be incorrect.
