ttechu is right by the way, the sickest thing about any of this is how much attention we give the killers in the media and on the web. Tell me, can any of you people who 'hate' us 'gun nuts' (without googling or doing any kind of research) please tell me the name of a few victims from any of these massacres?

Now, if you will, please tell me what killer's name, his state of mind or the weapon he was using. I bet you remember those alot better.

It's a morbid fascination and the 'victims' are just a number. Worse, they're fuel for the argument. Their deaths canonized and placed on a pedestal, but in truth nobody seemingly gives enough of a damn to remember them.

Is it any wonder these shootings still happen? The perpetrators get vast recognition and are remembered, their acts televised and talked about the world over.
That has nothing to do with weapons though, the murderers in all cases are remembered and the victims are long forgotten.

you left out the word 'doesn't'.

Sure is smart when you have someone who breaks into your house while home. This off duty officer sure was smart to have his gun.

It has everything to do with this discussion. The issue isn't the weapon, at all. That's a red herring at best.

These problems go deeper than that.

People who talk about these murders and immediately think "guns are what should be addressed!" have absolutely no idea what they're going on about. They're being lead by the nose or are just naive- possibly both.

Id actually be OK with that. IMO, unless you are military, no one needs to own a semi automatic gun or an assault rifle.

i used to think that way too but that isn't a good thing. there are many people suffering through the hands of their tyrant leaders that did not have weapons to defend themselves.

hence why i think 2nd amenment should be across the world.

i understand where DJ is coming from. it's sort of like when i was living in a small town Indiana. we'd leave our cars open and garage door open...i'm not going to lie that we had a bike stolen but that was the only thing in 11 years i stayed there.

you are going to have some areas that may not need so much defense but now living in city areas in TX, i feel like we do. funnily enough, i feel more safe in TX than other places i've been to because we have guns here lol.

in a perfect world, yes, we don't need guns, in relatively good areas, we don't need them generally but you should have one just in case.

no one's walking around with guns in their holsters. but trust me, if it ever came down to any incident where you feel threatened for your life, you will be praising someone around you has one.

    This is absolute lunacy.

I'm just glad that some of the 'safety provisions' a handful of members here want to pass wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in hell thanks to the existence of our Constitution.

    Laughed: http://news.yahoo.com/court-tosses-c...200220826.html

Also, worth pointing out to people like dj

John Gaver from Action America writes: Don’t think that just because the police are trained in the use of firearms that they are less likely to kill an innocent person. A University of Chicago Study revealed that in 1993 approximately 700,000 police killed 330 innocent individuals, while approximately 250,000,000 private citizens only killed 30 innocent people. Do the math. That’s a per capita rate for the police, of almost 4000 times higher than the population in general. OK, that is a little misleading. Let’s just include the 80,000,000 gun owning citizens. Now the police are down to only a 1200 times higher accidental shooting rate than the gun-owning population in general.

That still sounds high. So let’s look at it in a different light. According to a study by Newsweek magazine, only 2% of civilian shootings involve an innocent person being shot (not killed). The error rate for police is 11%. What this means is that you are more than 5 times more likely to be accidentally shot by a policeman than by an armed citizen. But, when you consider that citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as do police every year, it means that, per capita, you are more than 11 times more likely to be accidentally shot by a policeman than by an armed citizen. That is as low as I can get that number.

This is not meant to be an indictment of the police. In fact, because police often live on the edge, they naturally tend to shoot first and ask questions later. Although they are trained to repress this instinct, it does not always work, as evidenced by the number of innocent people killed by police. Also, since they are generally better marksmen, they tend to kill, rather than wound or totally miss their target.

It's called being prepared for anything. Same thing applies for having emergency supplies or something.

Must be nice to believe you live in a world where no crime occurs and no one ever needs to defend themselves.

Yea, I hear that is quite common in Canada.
Australia we lock our doors cause that's what people do here.
I sometimes forget but whatever i'm happy to deal with any intruders.
