The problem in the US here is if one damn thing happens, they always try to stop it and they will throw millions of dollars in doing so. Something has to happen once and that's all it takes and then you have all these voices getting thrown around. in this case, nothing needs to be done, $#@! happens, people die in the world everyday by different means, drunks, druggies, guns, motorcycles, any vehicle, any type of knife, falling down, etc etc.

One guy dies from high blood pressure and high cholesterol from eating double quarter pounders everyday and now the wife wants them to not make the food as greasy. o_O yea so people can stuff their fat faces with quarter pounders and not have to worry about health reasons? ugh This is just an example.

Anyway, it should already be a law that if someone is mentally ill, they shouldn't be able to get a gun. In fact I would say that if the mentally challenged individual poses a potential risk of this sort of behavior, then no gun shall be permitted in that residence. This would mean a lot of visits to therapists sessions to see if a potential risk is possible. Also, quite possibly neurologists as well, since both of these would know or some sort of specialist that is capable of understanding these mentally ill problems.

    I agree.

I don't really care for guns, but once I get my own house I'll likely buy a handgun. It makes sense to me to own one because of the additional safety it provides for my home. If I lived in a worse part of town I'd probably already have one.

But I don't like the overbearing 'gun mindset' some people have. I don't want guns to be normalized, as if they're an integral part of living your life, where people are walking around with M16's so that when Hitler shows up they all can turn into Billy Badass and take him down. I understand the intent for safety procedure, but there's a certain point where it turns into misguided paranoia, or even obsession.
your forefathers would like to disagree. the right to bear arms and the right to have militia was put there for a very specific and a recurring reason.

because you're generalizing. just because a person believes in bearing arms, doesn't mean that they hate gays.

Disagree with... what? That guns should be normalized? I very much doubt they'd want that either. They simply recognized the practical benefit of a weapon and the right to have one, just like I do.

    Not entirely.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
    reasons for second amendment:
enabling the people to organize a militia system.
    participating in law enforcement;
    deterring tyrannical government;[56]
    repelling invasion;
suppressing insurrection, allegedly including slave revolts;[57][58][59]
facilitating a natural right of self-defense.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_...s_Constitution

now obviously i don't agree with the suppression of slave revolts but that just happened to be the context of that time. it can be applied to anything i suppose.

i'm not disagree with you. i'm sure they also wanted you to hunt food with it and the self-defense is written in there. my point is that it wasn't just due to those things...it was for very specific reasons i listed above. it has been proven over time and time again that freedom is only temporary and revolt is inevitable in every instance. you should never let your guard down no matter what.

ironically i don't own a gun and have never shot anything with a gun...i have tried a gun but someone was holding my hand. in a perfect world, i would not want guns. i would not want violence or oppression. but i still agree with this amendment because this is not a perfect world and will never be.

"Guns" are not really the issue. There are other factors at play here as to why our society is the way it is.
Your in denial because your country loves guns.

from the perspective of crime, yes, it's difficult for me to cope with the fact that it's more dangerous to be in this country than most other developed countries. i try to stay in areas where there it is safer. but i agree with you. for this reason, i always keep Canada in the back of my mind. I do like that they don't have to deal with crime.

I assume that's what christopher means by his question, if you're in a safe area, it's almost like crime doesn't exist. i grew up in a small town where we were never worried about crime. it's only now in the bigger cities where we hear stories.

of all the years i've been here, i have never witnessed a crime. though i don't get out much. my wife's family has had instances from NY and Chicago. and they've had stuff happen to people they knew. so it's there, just not everywhere.

EDIT: also americans aren't walking around with guns in their pockets lol. i'm sure some do but i've never seen one. before i came to TX, i thought i'd see guns everywhere and everyone would be wearing cowboy hats.

i don't feel any difference here that i did anywhere else. in fact, i feel like there's less corruption here in the govt. sector.

Not only that, but he makes it sound like I can't walk go to work without seeing a gun somewhere. How often do you see a gun being carried by someone other than a police officer? He makes it sound like we stock up on ammo at the gas station once a week. "Guns is your culture"? What kind of bull$#@! is that?

true. but i don't mind when people say stuff like that because i know we all have some sort of bias before we really know about others. i know i still do about certain countries and i know it's silly and that's why i want to visit all these countries so i have a better understanding.

it's a human trait, we are afraid of the unknown.

right now i'm afraid to visit my own country but then i keep reminding myself that i used to live there and taliban aren't attacking the entire country and those drones are only in certain parts of the country.

just like i thought everyone would be wearing cowboy hats...i was seriously afraid the entire TX was going to be like El Paso Texas, like from Kill Bill

it's like no matter how much a person tries, until you've had exposure, it's very easy to get scared. even after you realize after knowing about multiple cultures that we're not all that different...it's still difficult.

but yes, you're right. i have never seen a person holding a gun in my entire life, except a cop...even that, i've only seen it holstered.

people see the bad side (crime) and assume the entire country is like that...i did too a while back...when the shootings had started. i'm more aware and knowledgable now so i'm not afraid. you have to push yourself to understand better or you will always be afraid.

Many years ago I agreed with the banning of firearms - I was naive. The evidence for it just doesn't stack up, and I like to form my opinions on evidence.

You don't need the founding fathers to tell you it's a good idea to be able to protect your family and property.

Simply put anti-gun activists just rely on riling emotions and people's lack of education on the issue.

i don't agree with US policing the world but washington got it right when he wanted everyone to have the right to bear arms. we're only looking at it by looking at the crime, we're not looking at it from a broader perspective. there are many oppressed nations out there that are being oppressed by their own leaders and these countries did not have these laws...i would think things were different if they had these laws.
