Does the U.S. need more gun laws or tighter security?

So the last shooting I know of took place at Purdue University:
    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...oting/4719831/

The U.S. keeps having incidents like this happen.

So my question is, does the U.S. need more gun laws or do we need tighter security?

For example, with the more gun laws option, a mentally ill guy or certain character would not be able to purchase a gun, weapons, and ammo to go and shoot up a university or high school.

With the tighter security choice, the guy would buy the guns and ammo but the police or security would meet him at the front gate and possibly stop him.

    What do you guys think?

What issue? Crime and bad people doing bad things? Good luck with that.

    Neither need to be done.

Actually read up on this stuff before going out and 'taking action', please.

This is a good read and it analyzes both sides fairly (hint: anti-gun rhetoric doesn't come out ahead in this objective comparison)

"Guns" are not really the issue. There are other factors at play here as to why our society is the way it is.

shootings can be helpful in gaining support for gun laws, funding for security and more freedoms being stepped on in order to control the sheeples.

for this reason, i'm doubtful how real these events are.

Nah, only law abiding citizens pay attention to laws.
You introduce laws against people who want to do right and they'll end up the victim as they can no longer protect themselves.

So how should the U.S. resolve the issue?

It can never be fully resolved, however to reduce it i'd suggest the death penalty, maybe also take out 1 or even both of the persons parents.

Could even make the offender watch the parents get hung/zapped/needled first before they also get put down.

Sure it sucks if you are the parent but hey they are also to blame and people will think twice if their actions will also affect their loved ones.

I know you only mentioned a single victim shooting, but:
    http://washingtonexaminer.com/crime-...rticle/2542118

according to James Alan Fox, author and criminology professor at Northeastern University, mass shootings have remained stagnant over 34 years, averaging 20 a year, and few were committed by the type of berserk psychos portrayed by the media.
“Public discourse is grounded in myth and misunderstanding about the nature of the offense and those who perpetrate it,” he writes in the journal “Homicide Studies.” He added: “Without minimizing the pain and suffering of the hundreds of those who have been victimized in recent attacks, the facts clearly say that there has been no increase in mass shootings and certainly no epidemic.”
They reviewed years of mass shootings and found that most shooters are not the crazed killers pictured on TV: Most are seeking revenge and practice their crime, like the two Columbine, Colo., killers.
I think the only thing we need to do is stop acting like this is something new. The biggest growth relating to shootings is how much more the media covers them, especially with the internet. When these shootings happened before it wasn't talked about outside of the state. Now, someone gets shot in a Dunkin Donuts in Washington and you hear about it in minutes whether you live in Washington, Florida, Oklahoma, Oregon, or even London.

Also, it wouldn't hurt if we legalized marijuana so we could free up a lot of prison room for those who are actually a danger to society (and I say this as someone with zero interest in marijuana).

Neither. The problem isnt guns, its the nutjobs that go around shooting people and parents who arent in-tune with their kids. The problem in this country is that no one wants to deal with mental health issues. Its easier just to pretend that its not happening and act like some people are just bad.

^The same can be said about gun regulation...

It's like knowing there's a fire hazard in your house, but neglacting to do anything about it. There could be something wrong with the electric wiring. Or there could be a gas leak. It's only a matter of time until disaster strikes. You know about it, but you choose not to do anything about it.

Why does this thread even exist?! It'll just bring out all the gun-loving lunatics who think guns should be worn by high school kids as a means of protection.

I know exactly where this is headed... Too many of these discussions were had in the past.

This. Shootings, mass or small cases have been going on for years. Most are with illegal guns i.e. Scratched off serial numbers, black market etc from gang violence or in urban areas. Those incidents don't get highlighted and talked about endlessly like these "mass shootings" in the suburbs. None of it should cause us to lose our constitutional rights as law abiding citizens.

I don't know, no matter what I think about guns, this feels like question that has to be answered by Americans. Their guns, their country, their lives etc.

Appreciate both the candor and characterization.

If only data was actually on your side.

ttechu is right by the way, the sickest thing about any of this is how much attention we give the killers in the media and on the web. Tell me, can any of you people who 'hate' us 'gun nuts' (without googling or doing any kind of research) please tell me the name of a few victims from any of these massacres?

Now, if you will, please tell me what killer's name, his state of mind or the weapon he was using. I bet you remember those alot better.

It's a morbid fascination and the 'victims' are just a number. Worse, they're fuel for the argument. Their deaths canonized and placed on a pedestal, but in truth nobody seemingly gives enough of a damn to remember them.

Is it any wonder these shootings still happen? The perpetrators get vast recognition and are remembered, their acts televised and talked about the world over.

the issue is that where there's crime, you need guns to protect yourself. other than the fact that there are some very lop-sided class differences here, which may also breed crime, this is a business, organizations/govt. make money off security and keeping people in jail.

also it is a wealthy nation so the desire to conduct certain sorts of crime (related to money) is almost inevitable.

people who don't get that guns are needed, likely are from places that don't have these issues. if you were living here, you would understand that you do need guns and guns are not the issue, the problem is to get rid of these ideologies. a reform is needed. we need to keep govt. agencies in check, because they are involved in these money-making schemes.

we need more transperancy. i'm positive that if people had gotten this country together and rid of it with its corruption, we could have adequate security. and honestly, if the classification of people in this country was more fair, we wouldn't have half the crime. we need to start from the core.

a country this wealthy should not have this many poor people, no it is not their fault, it's the system. we should not have only the top 1% who own a quarter of the world's wealth. the money that is taken by the rich should trickle back down into the economy, it doesn't. instead the people are being consumed, sucked dry. it not only breeds crime, it asks for an eventual revolt.
