    Why is it?

The phones of today are larger than the phones of 10+ years ago?

Yeah, I think that's the main reason too. Most people want a smart phone today and almost none of those people want one with a really small screen. The new phones are alot thinner than the old ones however.

I think it's because phone manufacturer's realise that people have big fingers and they are not suitable for texting, plus the rise of touch-screen as well.

Old phones had no screen or a 2' screen which was 320x240 LCD display at best with a small 12 digit number pad.
The Xperia SP I am getting next week has a 720P display on a 4.3' screen and 8mp camera with flash.

Yeah you typically need a large screen to be able to use the touch technology effectively, an old sized screen would be useless.

The actual first 'smartphone' to sell well (nokia 7650) was huge but had a smallish screen. 176 x144 res, 3mb of memory...them were the days lol.

I think they started getting to big. Samsung and others are even making phones like the Galaxy in a mini version 4 inch screen. Like the note, that thing is huge and I would never use it as a phone, more of a tablet.

On a side note, what was everyone's first smartphone. Mine was the hero. I fell in love with android the first time I laid eyes on it and haven't looked back.

Orange SPV e100 was my first one, then I got a Sony Errikson p900. Then I got a 300 phone bill one month and the appeal of contract phones and yearly upgrades faded!
