PS4 Is Selling Much Faster than its predecessors

    source

With 5.3 million sold through to customers since its launch in November, it’s a given by now that the PS4 is selling very fast, faster than its predecessors by Sony Computer Entertainment, but just how much faster? Thanks to NeoGaf user Aquamarine, we can catch a glimpse on that thanks to the sales data over time of all four home consoles by Sony:

    PlayStation:
    4 months (one territory) – March 31st, 1995 – 0.85 million
    10 months – September 30th, 1995 – 1.77 million
    16 months – March 31st, 1996 – 4.26 million
    22 months – September 30th, 1996 – 8.07 million
    28 months – March 31st, 1997 – 13.50 million
    PS2:
    1 month (one territory) – March 31st, 2000 – 1.41 million
    7 months (one territory) – September 30th, 2000 – 3.52 million
    13 months – March 31st, 2001 – 10.61 million
    19 months – September 30th, 2001 – 19.58 million
    22 months – December 30th, 2001 – 24.99 million
    PS3:
    1 month – December 31st, 2006 – 1.7 million
    4 months – March 31st, 2007 – 3.5 million
    7 months – June 30th, 2007 – 4.2 million
    10 months – September 30th, 2007 – 5.5 million
    13 months – December 31st, 2007 – 10.4 million
    PS4:
    1 day – November 16th, 2013 – 1 million
    2 weeks – December 1st, 2013 – 2.1 million
    1 month – December 28th, 2013 – 4.2 million
    3 months – February 8th, 2014 – 5.3 million

From the data showcased above we can gather that PS1 took ten months to sell 1.77 million units, PS2 took seven to sell 3.52 million. PS3 needed four months to move 3.5 million units.
PS4 is, for now, outpacing them all, having sold 5.3 million in just three months. Of course initial sales aren’t everything in this market, but for the moment there’s no reason on the horizon to predict a future slow down. It’ll be interesting to see where we’ll be at the end of the year, but so far so good.

I think this reflects on how much technology has got cheaper.

RAM is much cheaper as well. It dropped quite a bit since 2006. Also, AMD has been quite reasonable with their CPU prices and GPU prices compared to the competition.

word is out, the PS4 is the place for gamers. this isnt the old days where the majority of a console's games are exclusive...the majority of people play multiplatform games, and the best place to experience those is on the PS4...its quite simple...

    oh and its $100 cheaper

I think it has more to do with the console market being larger. I have astrong feeling that the PS4 might break the PS2's lifetime sale, even the X1 might.

So, do you think its going to sell another 5mil in the next three months? It might, but I sort of doubt it.
Almost everyone will say: buy console that has games that you want, and those who say otherwise are ignorant.

This is really impressive. I never expected this to happen the way it has, but then again, the PS4 has been on most gamers lips. MS has also started out well so far, but it looks like their momentum is dying a little. Looks to be another great generation of gaming.

Great news and I also agree that price has had a massive impact, the fact that's it's only £349.99 is in a lot of people's price range!

PS4 has hit the sweet spot for 2014, which is 1080P/60fps and $399 US. The kicker is the 8GB GDDR5 and dedicated game recording / streaming,

Additionally the controller feels like high end razor kit, the touch pad isn't a complete gimmick.

We also had wait for it for a lot longer than on any previous generation.

I believe this reason coupled with the price/power is the sole reason this thing is flying off the shelves. People are just ready to move on from the ps360 era. If the ps4 came out let's say in 2012 (adjust price and power accordingly), I don't think they will be sold out like they are now

I think most people were ready for a new generation of consoles by 2011 so I can understand why waiting an extra two years contributed to such a high rate of demand. It isn't by any means exclusive though. The seventh generation was far and away too long a generation and after six years, it's expected that something new needed to be made available. The seventh generation lasted seven years for Sony before the PS4 hit shelves and eight years for Microsoft before the Xbox One hit shelves. Think about this. A fifth grader who was lucky enough to receive a PS3 at launch is now out of high school and possibly in college. That's a good chunk of someone's childhood. After that amount of time, technology has progressed enough to really make a difference in a console's capabilities.

THIS paired with their system being $100 cheaper over the main competition. But the waiting period being so long is the main factor. Gamers were going mad for new hardware!

    8 years and counting!

another thing to mention is that with each generation, consoles are becoming more and more popular, the industry is growing rapidly. though i think there will be a point where sales will die down or not exceed the previous generation...that is, unless they come out with a more affordable console or a console that is made for the mainstream. PS4 is not for the mainstream. X1 is not either. once they get that price started at $300 and come out with games focused on the mainstream, we won't see a big hike next gen.
