    It lives!

Yesterday I had one of my best friends over to hang out for a few days. We both bought launch edition Ps3's & both of ours overheated. Mine died in 2009ish, his a few months later. A couple weeks ago he told me he fixed his & got the kit. I had often looked at the steps & while seeming simple, was daunting for me. When he came up, he brought his kit. My ol' Fatboy Playstation 3, backwards compatible. Hasn't seen the light of day in 5 + years. So we started the journey, using an air compressor to remove dust along the way. While I was a little anxious, what did I have to lose? A dead ps3 is a dead ps3.

Though, what if? What if he fixes it? in the restore. Halfway throug the repair some of the strangest $#@! I ever saw happened. We had my gas stovetop with a huge glass pan, two wood 2x4's on top of that & on top of those was my PS3 motherboard. It looked like something out of breaking bad rather than a dude trying to repair a playstation. Why the hell are we cooking an old Ps3? Continue drinking, shots & beers etc... 40 minutes later he yells at the top of his lungs "its time!". We all gathered around & witnessed. Oh boy did we witness. The green & blue lights. So much more majestic than the ugly yellow light of death. The magic of the XMB. All my old 480i movies that look like complete garbage on my new tv's. The old text messages still in tact, "you cheated douchbag" one of my prized ones.

Now as I sit as I set my Ps3 return to default settings, I am anxious. I lost the 3 before it had the truly great games. I missed out on Bioshock. I didn't play Skyrim. I never got to enjoy Grand Theft Auto 5. Now courtesy of my friend I have a chance to experience these games again. For that, I am thankful. I'm looking forward to going on a binge spending spree of amazing Ps3 games. If anyone has any must have recommendations for the system please let me know.

    TD;DR

I had a launch Ps3. Put it too close to a wall. It over heated. Didn't use it for 5+ years, best friend repaired it, I am amazed.

Congrats! I have a launch 20gig and it died last year. I had it repaired but I had to pay for it. Wish I knew that trick. I would've done that instead of paying 120 bucks. The last of us and gta 5 are 2 games I would pick up.

Congrats! But yeah my dad did a quick re-fit of the glue, but it didn't last more than a month.

Mind you , if you guys did it right (amidst the drinking ) it should be fine. But that feeling of restoration must've been great.

    Well done.

    #IndieStation4 and proud of it.

He had to redo his 3 times after it failing, trial & error etc. However since he last did his with his most aggressive attempt it has lasted almost half a year without any issue. Either way I'm not worried, just to see it start again was worth it. The arctic silver works wonders.

Where do you keep your Ps3? Might not be getting enough airflow. I've seen several people who have went 2+ years with a proper job.

2+ years with a proper reflow and reballing of the solder. The issue is the cheap solder on the motherboard. I think it is some lead free solder and it gets hair line cracks. Cooking your motherboard may fill some of the cracks enough to get you some game time, but they will crack again.

Might try mine in thoven because I used a heat gun on it previously and it worked only for a couple of months then did it again a couple more times until the heat gun no longer worked.
If it does work I will flog it

The issue with mine was the cheap ceramic paste melting. Though I've had experience reballing a CPU in a computer when I was a computer tech for an extremely poor high school - If it lasts a couple months then I'll consider doing this. I'm confident in his reflow job as he has now down it several times. I have it below my PS4 on its own dedicated expanded metal shelf, which will help keep it properly ventilated & wick heat away from the system. Going to not keep it on more then 3-4 hours at a time etc. May replace the hard drive if it stays for the long run as well

Thanks everybody! Still working. Haven't put it through a true stress test 3+ hours, but seeing as I am almost done with the Warframe Trophies, GTA 5 will be put to task very soon. Never played it, so stoked.

Today the Fatty died again Heartbroken. It now has the 3 red beeps, which I think is supposed to mean it needs a reball. Not worth it at this point so I'm gonna go buy an OG Slim 3 off craigslist later today for 140 with GTA included. Sad day

EDIT: Just got home, the Ps3 Slim works wonders! Only issue was missing a rubber snubber I swapped with my old one.
