Xbox One wins 'Product of the Year' 2014 award in consumer survey

I'm surprised at this with all that bad press it was getting months ago. Only 40,000 consumers voted but its still a nice accomplishment.
Xbox One has scooped its first consumer award. Microsoft’s next-gen console won the top home entertainment gong in 2014′s Product of the Year awards.
Gamespot reports that over 40,000 consumers were consulted through market research company TNS to determine their products of the year in various categories. The full list of winners has been published over on AdWeek.
Xbox One has topped the ‘Home Entertainment’ bracket, and according to Product of the Year’s organisers the console and its fellow winners will see a 10-15% sales boost as a result of being featured in an accompanying cover feature in Parade Magazine.
Speaking with Parade, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello said, “The gaming console has moved out of the basement and into the living room.”
Xbox One has currently sold over 3 million units worldwide and counting. Microsoft hopes to get more gamers on board with this UK price cut and Titanfall console bundle.
What do you make of Xbox One so far?

Nice. Odd to see Xbox One sandwiched between "Premium Wood Finish" and "Rodent Repellent Trash Bags".

    • Home Care: Mint-X Rodent Repellent Trash Bag
    • Home Entertainment: Xbox One
    • Home Improvement: Cabot Premium Wood Finish

Lol did they just really say they would receive a 10-15 percent boost in sales because they were featured winners in Parade magazine. Who the $#@! reads parade anymore to know about the winners?

They decided that X1 is the product of the year 2014, in February.

I was a doubter until I got mine at launch. It is definitly an awesome machine. The best overall video game machine? No, PS4 wins that thus far. But for the overall package it is amazing.

However, my Xbox One is growing on me more and more. I can't wait to see what both systems do in the future.

You can recover from being dead in the water, not that that was the case with Xb at launch though. "Everyone" knew that wouldn't be the case. Saying that Xbox or any product is the best of the year in Jan/Feb is a new level of absurd though. It's advertisement at best!

Well, it won best home entertainment. You cant really say there is another product out there coming this year that will do more.

Its not absurd to say its the best home entertainment device unless you know of something else coming that performs the same functions. You are reading too much into the title. It won the award but for only one category. Its not saying its the best overall product of the year.

I was wondering this - how are they basing it? Year to year? Features? Because if that were the case, a NUMBER of things should'could win.

I can see the next iPhone/Android (phone or tablet) winning it (not necessarily this award, but you know, proper ones.. )

Only 40,000 people voted? Was the poll held on the Xbox forum or something?

Well....how are they basing Huggies Designer Tubs winning? Did they weigh the amount of $#@! it pulled off a baby's ass?

So many questions. So few answers.

    I found the answer.

The 40,000 consumers who vote are independently recruited by TNS to represent the national grocery shopping population.

lol.....oh....and "winning" cost Microsoft $70k. Cuz this is all a big marketing scheme. You have to enter your product and if you are "chosen" as a "finalist"....ya pay $7,000. The chosen finalists are then voted on by a bunch of grocery shoppers, apparently. If you get the top vote.....ya get to pay another $63k to be able to say your product was "Product of the Year" based on "market research". lol....what bull$#@!.

I'm going to talk to Steven. PSU is doing its "game of the year" thing all wrong.
