Okay, enough is enough! (REP and Points Given)

    Hey PSU people!

So, over the course of around 2-3 years, I have went through 2 Asus laptops. They both had the same hardware problems, though the current Asus is a slower processor.

I know Asus is a good brand, I mean, they're nice looking laptops and the price is right.

The problem is, my very first laptop, a HP, last 3 years without any problems. I've had only 1 HP laptop.

So now the current Asus's port just tore up AGAIN. I paid $200 to fix it and now it's time for another $200.

Nah, I'll move this Asus on and let someone else do as they will with it.

My question to you guys is:

    1. Sony, Toshiba, HP, and Asus. Out of those 4, which brand usually makes the best laptops? My sister had a Sony and mom has a Toshiba, so those are safe options but if I'm going to spend money on a brand new laptop, I want the best I can get.

    2. What is a reasonable price for a laptop? I'm looking for 4 GB RAM, 500-750 GB Hard Drive, 2.3 GHZ processor, and Windows 8 OR Windows 7. I also prefer a colored laptop instead of the normal black and silver laptops. It must have ethernet ports, access to wifi, and a webcam.

    Here is what I found:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-15-6-Lapt...item1c3cd7cf6b

If you find a deal that beats the link above, I will give you 500 sp points and rep.

    3. My price range is $500 and below.

    Thank you!

I'm just posting this to get the thread moving. I'm sure someone can find a better laptop.

    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-K55N-DB81...eywords=laptop

    More RAM? ✔
    Required HDD size? ✔
    Under 500$? ✔
    Webcam? Ethernet and wifi? ✔

Better Processor? Sorta. It's generally better for multitasking, and the integrated graphical chipset is superior. I'd say it's the better of the two for a laptop.
    In color? Sadly not.

HP all the way. Just make sure you pick a business class machine and not the $#@! they sell in the shops.
    Anything in the Probook line.
I wouldnt touch another Toshiba, Ive dealt with many many many of them.

Why buy a laptop off a company that doesn't make any other computing products? Both Sony and Toshiba no longer have a place in that market space.

my Sister has an HP ultrabook:
    http://www.amazon.com/HP-4-1130us-14...productDetails

It's a bit higher price and has less HDD (500GB). but better CPU and RAM plus a 32GB SSD (don't know where they put that though )

if the price is too high:
    http://www.amazon.com/HP-6-1110us-15...productDetails

    this one is sufficient too.

IMO, high capacity HDD on laptops are a disaster waiting to happen. My laptop is being fitted with a small SSD (250GB) and my personal files will be saved on my network...much safer imo.

    EDIT:
NOTE: Ultrabooks don't have CD drives....but then, i haven't used one of those in years. if you really need contents off of a CD, put it onto flash drive on another PC and launch off usb on ultrabook.

Damn, I have an ASUS laptop. Bought it last year and it is still a beast. I will be livid if it starts to crap out on me.

Truer words have never been spoken.

On topic: Samsung is also a very respectable brand to go with.

Everything that's even lower in price won't make you happy imo - they only have weak Intel dual cores or AMD cpus.

Asus hands down from the ones mentioned. In addition the specs you're desiring are fairly low power, so I cannot imagine that you'd be paying more than say $600 for such a laptop.

Sony's Vaio support will be very iffy from here on out...

I have had a very good experience with Acer, so I recommend them. I've owned an Aspire 5xxx series.

Edit: Whatever you do, don't settle for poor/mediocre build quality.

College work, watching LOTS of videos on youtube, using skype, entertainment purposes, and etc. I'm not going to use it for gaming or photoshop.

Yes, the first one is too high. The second one is too slow; I am looking for at the very least a 2 GHZ. Also, like you said, it does not have a CD drive.

Keep in mind clock speed (gigahertz) is a relatively small factor in determine the actual muscle of a processor nowadays. What matters now is architecture, local memory cache (L1, L2, and L3), and the amount of available cores. Pentium CPUs can easily pass the 3.0Ghz threshold, but they still suck.
