    rapture does make a good point. since DX9, we haven't seen much improvements in real terms except maybe more shader effects and now we're barely starting to see tesselation.

    though it's still interesting to see what it promises, especially if it is going to make PC development more close to how consoles work. what trickery must it be!?

    The visual benefits in ratio to performance loss is not remotely adequate. Microsoft needs to really pull DX12 together and make it much more optimized, especially with Mantle on the way. Give hardware-level access and clean up redundancies.

    I know exactly what you mean. when i was gaming at the end of DX 9 era...i remember even turning on "smoke" in a video game basically killed your video card...

    or just self-shadowing. it was pretty surprising how a small thing like that could bring your game down from 50~ to 20fps. after that, i didn't see huge amounts of advancements in terms of actual features. they're there but who is going to utilize them in their games? and will it be practical? those are the questions.

    though the features should be more useful in a console because being a closed environment, i suppose a developer has more incentive to tweak it to fit in a more practical way, since if they can run it...then it's good for all consoles. maybe, maybe not. i'm not a developer but i do understand the concept.

    It could be potentially linked to console cycles. DX10 came out at the end of 2006 so PS3 and 360 hardware was set. Any game that was going to span the consoles and PC would have to be based on features all 3 could do. PC would eventually get DX11 support but then DX9 would be required for backwards compatibility with older hardware that makes up the majority of the user base. Perhaps?

    Really depends, if it is a more efficient framework, thats good. The real question is does expose new GPU features, or merely improve driver performance.

    It has bugger all to do with consoles and more to do with windows operating system attach rates.
    Direct X 10 was only in Vista and above and the time it released the vast majority used XP so to make games using DX10 would only target a very small percentage of gamers.

    Even at the end of 2008 XP was still most popular

    That's true. We still don't have tessellation on games on PS4 and X1. Any new features on DX11,12 will be on OpenGL, but it will require much optimization to even free up resource.

    For X1, it has to optimize to 1080P first and optimize even more for extra resources for any new features. I find it unlikely. Unless new feature replaces old feature and does it much cheaper and efficient. Then, it would be win for both consoles.
