Far too much competition out there to gimp the system. It would be suicide.

As much as I would hate having to shell out $400 for the VR, I would immediately if it meant Sony did not skimp out on the quality. Honestly, a lot of people pay that much just to upgrade their video card in their PC's.

I like the fact that Sony is going into VR, but I have a 1080p television to play video games. Also the television won't cause me motion sickness. If they fix the motion sickness problem, then I might be interested.

I like the idea of VR, but at a price point that's near the PS4's price I just don't know. There will have to be some damn compelling software out for it before I drop cash on it. I'm intrigued.

The webzine sites that got to try the Morpheus are reporting that motion sickness is much less than Occulus Rift. Sony has been working on reducing motion sickness for several years. Also, this is 1080p split between two eyeballs, so each screen is 960 by 1080. The effect is supposed to be like being in the middle of a movie theater, the movie appears to be all around with head tracking, and the player is in the movie. I think the Morpheus is going to work well while laid back in a recliner and feel like you are in the middle of a virtual stage.

definitely. What's even better here is that Sony has the backing to make this technology much stronger. They have the games and the huge support to pull this off.

I hope it isn't expensive. The bull$#@! of people will pay for it if they just say they didn't skimp is not for me. I prefer to be well made and cheap. When I can by a phone with 1080 for under 100 bucks I don't see why the screens are expensive. I would buy it at 200 to 250 mark otherwise it isn't worth it for a novelty

QFT. I almost want to put this in my sig.

Interesting post though. My guess is his "friend" is actually the poster but it's irrelevant.
I hope every word of that is true. Especially in regards to the software (A VR interface!? ) Even the "considering a cheaper option" part. At least they're thinking realistically. I also kind of like the name PlayStation View. But in the end, Morpheus has to last the lifetime of the PS4 (at least...) so future proofing would be important. And also as mentioned, the cost will go down over time. Once the hardcore buy it for a high price *raises hand* it will catch on and trickle down to average Joe once they try it at a buddy's house. Having two SKUs sounds good in theory but it could lead to consumer confusion if not done properly, and likely the people that try the cheaper option will say "this sucks" and dismiss it altogether.

    That being said,
Launch software is CRUCIAL. First impressions will be everything. If you deliver something truly revolutionary to people, they will buy it at a high price. Justify the cost with the software.

I'd rather Sony take their time, develop amazing software and hardware and release at a high cost instead of rushing to market at a low price and turn VR into a fad, when it could be SO much more. You'll see...You'll all see....

Must not be a new phone. Hell a Galaxy S4 without a contract is $500.
    http://sam.factoryoutletstore.com/ca...500-White.html

And the contract free Iphone 5s is $649.
    http://store.apple.com/us/buy-iphone/iphone5s

You can buy both phones for substantially less if you sign up for 2 year contracts. That's how they make back their money.

Who is paying 500 bucks for a s4? they are selling them at metro for 398. also you are getting far more with your phone.......I am not thinking VR goggles are going to need to be computers. As for the motion sync we already use that with your sixaxes.

The Last of Us confirmed for PS4?!
The Last of Us, God of War and Drive Club are being built into brand new VR experiences from the ground up.

Seems like it would be a bit odd. Maybe the "ground up" means that they will be first person for VR?

Yeah I can imagine this going really good or really bad. Seems a given that fps will be ideal but using your eyes and head movement for directing the camera could be tricky. On the other hand it may keep the camera behind you easier by eliminating using your thumb and replacing with your eyes. Which may be more natural? Idk. Just throwing some of my thoughts out there.

Yeh they will have to be very creative to find a way to create an equally immersive "presence" experience for 3rd person POV

a feature that i think would be kind of neat and unique to add to morpheus, would be to make the black part of the outside visor a touch pad with two cameras on the front to display your rsurroundings. so when you wanted to put the visor and game on hold, but didnt want to remove the visor, you could just swipe a virtual visor away, or even use the swipe function for the ingame hud changing camera modes, like from normal, to infrared, night vision and so on . Just an idea
for some reason, i feel like stuffing an unrevealing yet obvious porn dvd case with goldfish snack crackers after removing the dvd and sell it to a gullible teenager.

The effect is supposed to be like being in the middle of a movie theater, the movie appears to be all around with head tracking, and the player is in the movie. I think the Morpheus is going to work well while laid back in a recliner and feel like you are in the middle of a virtual stage.
I've read the opposite with regards to motion sickness, as Palmer and Carmack and their team have made some pretty incredible improvements in latency and blurring with the Rift DK2, no doubt helped significantly by the low-persistence OLED screen they're using, which is also 1080p (split, 960x1080).

The effect, by the way, is not like being in the middle of a move theater, as you describe. I've got a Rift DK1 (and a DK2 on the way) and the experience is, rather, more like being wherever the virtual world is (which is the point), and less like being in a movie theater (unless the virtual world is a movie theater

While you can certainly sit in a recliner and enjoy a VR experience, my experience is that VR is best enjoyed and more immersive if you assume the position of your "avatar". For lots of experiences (e.g. driving, mech controlling, flying planes, etc) that is sitting, but sitting in a more engaged way than simply lounging back in a recliner. For other experiences, standing is most immersive. Playing Half Life 2 in VR while standing is an incredibly immersive experience (one of the best VR experiences I've had). The Dreadhalls demo is an absolute blast to play while standing (while also being one of the most terrifying experiences of my life).

In any event, I'm glad Sony is supporting VR because it'll encourage the production of more VR content, which is needed.
