The Last of Us Real-Time vs Pre-Rendered...Graphical Jump...

The Last of Us Real-Time vs Pre-Rendered Models Tease The Graphical Jump For Uncharted On The PS4

A few weeks ago, we heard about how Uncharted on PS4 will offer the visual fidelity of the cutscenes of The Last of Us on PS3. This sounds pretty good, right? But how big of a jump are we talking about here? We can see this by taking a look through the gameplay and the pre-rendered cutscenes of The Last of Us on the PS3.
When it comes to Naughty Dog games, they use a different approach to in-game cinematics. They are often very high quality in terms of their visuals, the effects are all turned up a notch, anti-aliasing is applied and the models are also of higher quality compared to their gameplay counterparts. For an example, the polygon count of Nathan Drake in Uncharted 2 was approximately 37k, and almost double of that in pre-rendered cutscenes. Since Naughty Dog games have a lot of focus on the story and character development, not to mention they also use these cutscenes as a way to pass off loading, it does make sense for them to use pre-rendered cutscenes. On PS3, this was mainly due to the limitation of the hardware, especially its RAM. If they hadnít done it, we would have gotten long load times between levels.
So what will happen with their first game on the PS4? We have heard teases about how it might end up, offering visual fidelity closer to the cutscenes of The Last of Us, which were superb on their own. As a result, we decided to see how the in-game models compare to the cutscene ones in The Last of Us.

Conclusion? The last of Us is a gorgeous game, and Naughty Dog's visual standards are impeccable.

    In other news, water's wet!

In seriousness though. This is expected, Naughty Dog have set a pretty high standard for themselves, and it's one people are expecting them to maintain.

I mean damn, you'd be a fool to look at this and say it was anything but the highest quality possible on the console. I mean the leap to the Pre-rendered stuff looks minor - from my humble perspective of course

But to draw to the article. Naughty Dog used 8 PS3's to render these scenes, yes? The PS4 is 10x more powerful...or so devs have said. So one would expect that in instances, the next gen game should look better - possibly bumping up the environment and other rudimentary things people pay no attention to?

It'll look better than the cutscenes. I hope they go 1080/30fps. I hated that uncharted 3 60fps footage. Made me feel sick.

ND are going to retain the console graphics crown. One does not simply dethrone the undisputed king.

1080p and 60fps need to be the standard now going forward.

Can agree to this for multiplayer. Single player on the other hand, could be debated.

I'm fine with 30fps for games like UC and Tomb Raider. Having played TRE on the PS4 and then TR on PS3, the frame rate being 30fps on the PS3 didn't really bother me or detract from the game. I say this having never played TLOU, but I'm an UC vet, I do think that SSM holds the crown for best PS3 graphics. GoW3 and Ascension are just mind blowing to this day.

Everything feels smoother at 60fps, the PS4 should easily have the grunt for that.
