Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge & SCE London Studio hit by layoffs

    http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/drivec...y_layoffs.html

Multiple Sony studios have been hit by layoffs this morning, SCEE has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

UK studios Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London Studio have each been affected, and while total numbers have yet to be confirmed, VideoGamer.com understands that numerous people from each studio have been made redundant.
"Regular reviews take place throughout SCE Worldwide Studios, ensuring that the resources that we have in such a competitive business can create and produce high quality, innovative and commercially viable projects," a Sony spokesperson told us this morning.
"As part of this process, we have reviewed and assessed all current projects and have decided to make some changes to some of our European Studios. As a result of this, there will be a focused restructure within London Studio, Guerrilla Cambridge Studio and Evolution Studio to ensure that the SCE WWS is in the best position to achieve their goals going forward.
"Our first party development studios are key to our creative strategy and we are very excited about the future projects being worked on."
Evolution Studios is currently developing much-delayed PS4 racer DriveClub, with Guerrilla Cambridge having wrapped up work on Vita shooter Killzone Mercenary last year. SCE London Studio, meanwhile, completed work on PS4 freebie The Playroom last year and is rumoured to have been working on an unannounced PS4 title.
Sony adds that the "development of Driveclub will not be affected" by today's news.
The layoffs follow a wave of redundancies at Sony Santa Monica last month after the studio's unannounced new IP was cancelled.

So is this people out of a job because of money or just a shake up of the studios? Sounds like the latter.......

Hmmmm. We may never know the true impact of these lay-offs, but I don't believe Sony are known for gutting studios, so maybe they're doing just as they say and ridding themselves of unneeded employees. Who knows though, hopefully there isn't something more untoward going on.

They don't need as many people working on a game compared to the PS3.

Evolution Studios - man that makes me even more concerned about Driveclub. Something has seriously gone wrong there somewhere.

However, and while I hate to see people losing their jobs, I do applaud Sony making tough decisions to drive a high performance culture. Delivery and be rewarded, under-deliver and you're out.

Those people might have been hired temporarily on a short term contract and hen the game is almost complete they are no longer needed.

Releasing people once they've completed the term of their contract isn't synonymous with the term 'lay off' to me, but it could be the case I guess.

Hope those affected won't be out of work for too long.

Doesn't sound hopeful for a killzone mercenary sequel neither which is a shame, damn good game for the vita and was hoping for another.

If those people got the pink slips due to Driverclub failed to meet expectations and had to "go back to the drawing board," yea I agree with you. They got what they deserved. Why let them keep their jobs when they obviously suck at it...

Maybe the reason Sony is doing this is because currently the amount of people needed to complete a game is minimal at best. The massive teams are not needed anymore, in comparison to last gen. I truly hope that is the case.

Rushy the community manager at evolution said that drive club is not effected by the layoffs on twitter. I think the ps4 is too easy to program for so people are getting laid off lol. They'll all bounce back the indy way

Evolution Studios needs some new blood, imo. The driveclub debacle has been just that. Frankly, sounds like a mess. The other two don't seem to have anything coming out anytime soon so....yeah.

I guess that sort of explains driveclub's delay. Some serious downsizing going on lately.

It would be nice for Sony to explain what is going on.

Last I heard a months ago, they were hiring on regular basis for studios.

    So was it:

    Lay off to trim fat?
Lay off to make room for more qualified new people? (typical GM management tatic)
Lay off because Sony is in trouble financially?

I bought PS4 due to excellent studios Sony owned that will make exclusives for them. I didn't buy the console necessarily based on games that were out there. I bought it for their track record of great exclusives.

This layoff doesnt change the fact that they still have far better studios than their competition, but I hope this is not a trend from Sony of laying developers off constantly.

    WTF is going on?

    http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/a...rtainment.aspx

Seth Killian (pictured left), a familiar name among fighting game fans, has left his position as a lead game designer with Sony Computer Entertainment and moved on to a new, unnamed venture.

Though he was a fixture in the fighting game scene before, Killian came into the spotlight when he was working with Capcom leading up the launch of Street Fighter IV. In fact, the game's final boss is named after him (as is a character in Divekick). He joined Sony in 2012, helping to create PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

Killian confirmed the departure via Twitter, though he only hints that we should "stay tuned" to see his current project.
    http://www.videogamer.com/ps4/drivec...n_studios.html

DriveClub's game director Col Rodgers has left Evolution Studios, VideoGamer.com can reveal.
    col rodgers -

Rodgers left the studio in February to form indie startup Big Red Switch Games, a development studio that he says is working on "some cool game concepts".

Rodgers also confirmed to VideoGamer that his departure is not connected to today's wave of layoffs, which saw redundancies at Evolution, Guerrilla Cambridge and Sony London Studios.

However, with Rodgers out it isn't yet clear who will be leading development on Evolution's delayed PS4 racer in his place.

Earlier this month it was revealed that Sony had previously taken DriveClub "back to the drawing board", although the game is still technically due to launch in early 2014.

Sony claims that the development of DriveClub "will not be affected" by today's layoffs.

I think the delay explains the layoffs. If the devs are not getting it done then time to find some who will.

    Rubbish.

And if VR really is being pushed to launch this fall, then Sony have lost the plot.

That doesn't make much sense to me. VR won't be coming anytime soon. No need to keep delaying a title that so many are eagerly waiting to play just because of VR, which isn't coming for a while.

    This is true.

DC isn't (or rather, SHOULDN'T) affected and delayed because of VR. FWIH, it's to do with the social integration as well as various other engine design which they're fixing.

Can't source, was one of the dozens of gaming podcasts I've subscribed to. Don't take my word for it.
