RUMOR: PS4: Support for PS1 and PS2 Titles with Native 1080p, VR Demos and More...

    source

PS4: Support for PS1 and PS2 Titles with Native 1080p, VR Demos and More Coming According to Insider

E3 is approaching fast, and according to industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, that is normally quite accurate with the information his sources give him, Sony has a lot of interesting things in the pipeline, as he said today on Twitter.
    Be excited: 1. Local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p rendering for select titles. 2. Bluray+Media Player updates
    3. VR demos from at future events 4. PS4 exclusive game stuff 5. PlayStation Now launch
Number 1 Iíve known for a good minute, but software is still buggy and not every game works. Please be excited.
Ahsan continued by giving more details on whatís going on behind the scenes with the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset:
Devs Iím talking to really want to try Morpheus. Community feels like it is the best way to introduce VR to mainstream consumers.
Oh and Sony has opened the floodgates asking for open criticism from third parties on Morpheus and what they want to see in a final product.
If you are interested in how Sony is approaching Morpheus, they are designing it similar to PS4 and Dualshock 4. Taking developer feedback.
If proven true, a few of those elements would probably raise the excitement level for the console between those that have asked for some form of backwards compatibility. As for the design of Morpheus, Iím not surprised: Sony has learned that developer feedback is incredibly important for development, and seems to be putting that notion to good use like it did with the PS4 itself.
Of course we should take all of this with a pinch of salt, considering that there has been no official announcement from Sony itself, but we can only hope that Ahsanís sources are accurate. There are quite a few PlayStation and PS2 games Iíd love to play on my PS4.
If youíre wondering if itís possible for older titles to be rendered in 1080p, it definitely is. PC Emulators for both consoles (and for the PSP as well) already support that feature and it works wonders, so it isnít that incredible that the PS4 would be able to do the same with the right software. Its architecture is not that different from that of a gaming PC, after all.

I know this is a rumor, but I do hope this is true. There are a couple of games from my PS2 days that I have yet to play and need to experience and some I need to re-experience on the PS4.

....................... Will have to see the library on PS2 title (if it happens [which, lets be honest, is extremely likely]) While there are games I wanna play from then we all know the are only gonna get the major titles and ones they have licenses to. I still don't see why disc based emulation seems so out of the question (and before some numnuts comes and says such NO it is NOT because the drive can't read DVDs. BLU-RAY SPEC)

This would be pretty awesome. Still a ton of old PS2 games I want to play.

Does this mean "play from disc", which is the only way this would really get my interest, or digital playback?

Chances of me spending $10-$20 for an old is slim. Unless it's like Dark Cloud or something..

This is good for 3D based games.

Some of the sprite based games on the PS1 though will still look like crap

PC emulators have been doing this for donkeys years. WTF Sony! hurry up and make this thing real

I'm hoping that it runs from disc, but the upscaled games would have to be digitial, wouldn't it

I don't see why. The original PS3 does upscaling for PS2 disc based games. Plus we see DVDs getting upscaled all the time.

That would be awesome. PS1 was probably my favorite PS console overall. I'd love to play a lot of those games again and not have them look like garbage on an HDTV. It's like you gotta have a standard TV laying around to play these games today or they're awful looking. I hate that. PS2 games would just be the icing on the cake.

didn't the PS3s with PS2 playability have the emotion engine in them to make it possible?

Correct. Well the first launch machines had the rest of a ps2 inside it. There was essentially a ps2 inside the ps3 :P.

The European launch consoles just had Emotion Engine inside it and the minimum chips needed to support it for backwards compatibility.

PCSX2 emulator on PC can upscale 3D PS2 games from disk to native 1080p! It takes a fair bit of power, but in a lot of cases works really well.

I hope this comes to the PS4!

Too bad it won't be disc based (not because they can't, but because "Let's sell that PS2 catalogue again!" even though the PS2 selection is pitifully small) but a least I'll be able to play my downloadable PS1 titles on PS4, which outnumber my physical copies (Only have MGS, Final Fantasy Tactics, and 3/4 of FF8 rendering it unbeatable since one disc is missing) My significant PS2 collection is going to rot, though, especially the Eyetoy stuff, which won't even work in Emulation because no emulator makers want to support or emulate the eyetoy, and I doubt Sony will bother since there isn't that much stuff on there. Antigrav will just have to be a game I never really get to play again.

ALSO, a lose for Net Neutrality means a lose for Playstation Now. That will eat up data so fast, you can guarantee that Comcast and AT&T will throttle, and all the ISPs may enter a deal to throttle stuff like that together. Hell, it even puts a damper in downloadable games, because Data caps are likely on their way.
