Off-Topic section layout change [Feedback appreciated]

If you wander on down to the 'Off-topic' section you will notice that a bunch of stickied threads have been broken off into their own little sub-section.

It's a particular bugbear of mine to have up-to-date news hidden in our giant sticky threads. So i have opened up the sections to, hopefully, allow users to post their own threads on subjects they have interests in.
This is primarily a trial run for those who use the sections and hope they will make use of the space to post news relevant to the topic at hand.

Report back on how you like using the layout, any changes you feel we should make, questions regarding the subsections themselves. etc. any and all feedback is appreciated.

Nothing to do with off topic Fijan, but can the subs section be removed from the media tab? Shouldn't really belong there tbh

Thank you Mr Fijian. I think the opening up of these subs was great, especially the LOLs section.

Mind if we change "NFL" to Football (American) since it isn't just NFL football?

there is a plan i assure you. However, VB dislikes the word aesthetics, so

it should look neat again in time.

    EDIT:
Keep in mind, if you guys don't like it, say you don't like it and i can switch the subforums all back to their respective sticky. We just want to see if this is something you guys might like, instead of being cooped up in a single thread all the time.

So the lols and fails section we open new thread to post our single pic or video?
Just asking, it not like it has useful information in it is it?

    Soooo...

There is a subsection with a single thread in it, that hasn't had any activity in 16 months. How does that make any sense?
Split the sports section, adding the Football[Soccer] as a subsection consisting of only five threads that have anything posted this year.
... also putting an NFL subsection that has a single thread being used, that is still the sticky it was before.

Makes no sense at all. I'm just saying from a practical standpoint of course.

Maybe a thread asking if it was something the forum members thought would be nice?? I don't know how well criticism is taken here, but this was a pretty illogical doing.

It looks bad, in my opinion.

I agree that it doesn't seem right to open up the Off-Topic forum with more subforums. The LOLs and Fails subforum is also too wordy. Better to keep it simple and orderly (Forum Games, Entertainment, Sports etc.) like it was before.

the 'looks', as people are referring to it, can be worked on.

The intent is more 'utility' than aesthetics. We want people to use the sections to post news and info relevant to their topic. We can work on how the layout 'looks' later.

In fact, we should hopefully have something in testing soon.

But i digress, these are by no means fixed. We're merely assessing the communities uptake of the idea. If people prefer the single giant thread for all their news, we can change it back to the way things 'used to be'.

Me personally, i like to go straight to the pertinent news than sift through pages and pages of discussion. I can join the discussion once im up-to-date.

I'm trying to figure out the logic here. Did you even think it through, or just did this on a personal whim?

    You made four subforums.

Football[American] - still has the sticky thread that it was supposed to eliminate the need for. Which, by the way, is the only thread utilized. It isn't a thread that is so active that you would be pages and pages back in the news. You have maybe two topics at a time going on for a couple of days. That activity goes down after a dozen or less posts.

Sure, a new thread can be created for an interesting news topic, but judging by the activity in the sticky thread, that won't last more than two days and maybe a page of replies.

Football[Soccer] - A nice section with 5 active threads. The sticky thread is used by a handful of members, mostly during matchdays. A couple days throughout the week with some sporadic news or topics discussed. The other threads are team specific and rarely updated by more than two/three members per team.

Blu's EPIC SUB-SECTION - Making that was probably one of the poorest administrative decisions I've seen within a forum tree.

    Motorsport - Well, that's a close second.

With some actual thought going into this, I doubt it would have been done. Just makes a cluster of sections in a poor traffic area as it is. I suggested it above, obviously ignored, that polling the members on something like this would have been more beneficial than just tossing something out there and see how it goes.

Your Feedback has been noted on both occasions, though I won't be drawn into an argument regarding the matter.

I'll simply state that the off-topic section was selected for a reason, Sport specifically for it's week in week out nature.

I can tell you that it won't increase traffic, or the appearance of it. When you look at the statistics after this change, your going to notice that the clickthrough numbers will go down, and the time on site/time in thread, will also be down.

Please don't think I'm trying to start an argument. I'm simply stating the obvious. As you can see, others have pretty much the same feeling about it; in a general sense.

I know I'm a newly registered member, but I've been a lurker here for quite some time.

Personally I think these are good moves. There are entire forums dedicated to subjects like these. Frankly, it makes more sense than having a single thread that is constantly being added to, imo. I know the american football forum will pick up in the fall. Being the offseason, not much to talk about.

It would make sense if there was enough activity to support splintering the Off Topic section.
Football[Soccer]With eight years as a dedicated thread, and six years for the teams... Um, why hasn't it been done before?

Good moves? Based on what? What entire forums for subjects like these? Might be some forums with more than 50-60 active members lol.

The NFL section barely gets activity throughout the season. A dozen members use it.

The administration here has grouped sections together when they don't have that much activity, and now they decided to split the off topic section into categories that have little activity?

Maybe they didn't use it because it was in a single thread. It wasn't easy to start a new topic. Just had to keep adding to the single thread. This could help generate some more posts. Who knows and franky, who cares? if nothing comes out of this then we are no worse off. Why is so this controversial to you?

I personally think it looks fine. There is nothing messy about it when looking at the main forum page. Categories are a good thing. It makes it easier for members to know where to create new threads. And easier to locate such threads.

One thing that drives me nuts though, is that the Other Gaming sub forum has "Xbox" instead of "Microsoft". Or change "Nintendo" to "Wii"

It isn't controversial. I'm simply discussing the topic.

    The Admin said,
Report back on how you like using the layout, any changes you feel we should make, questions regarding the subsections themselves. etc. any and all feedback is appreciated.
Which is exactly what I am doing.

Who cares? Well, for the sake of the actual community, I sure hope the admin staff actually cares. Rather than just throw things out there and "let's see how it goes" mentality, actually gauge the community BEFORE doing things.

It doesn't look nice, and when others come into the community, they'll see things that just don't have that much interest at all.

A LOL's section, that has two threads? Doesn't make any sense, no matter how you excuse it.
