Ouch! Not good. Sony continues to have to sell off stuff. Not good news considering they just posted a huge loss just a few weeks ago.

I think the 7mill does a bit to help alleviate that.

It does but as you can see cuts still have to be made. The business doesn't thrive off of console sales alone.

...Or otherwise, it wasn't a worthwhile investment in the end.

Plenty of ways to look at this. It doesn't all have to be doom and gloom (with Sony that is, I'm sure everywhere else is peachy).

Not really, Sony bought those shares back in 2001 to save SquareSoft from the Final Fantasy movie disaster. Enix merged with Square in 2003 and company became known as Square Enix. Since that time Square's quality has gone downhill massively.

Really they should have sold these years ago, probably forgot about them.

oh, it's not doom and gloom, but it isn't all peachy either. Selling off a few things here and there is normal, but when you do it on the regular is another story, and lately they have been doing a lot more selling than buying . It's all a part of the restructuring , I guess.

EDIT: @Sub. Yup. the reconstruction has been going for a while and you know what? i think it's working out for them with PlayStation at the very least. you know, breaking all-time records and all that.

What's a few, peachy, doom, normal; and regular?

It's awesome they are breaking records. I say more power to them. I hope they keep it up because they are going to need it. Let's see if they can turn that recent loss around next year.

You all keep saying Square Enix hasn't made a good game in a long time.....Did none of you play the new Tomb Raider?

What SE hasn't done was make a decent Final Fantasy game in years.

This is good business for Sony. They dont get the return of investment from the company.

Dont worry the PS4 will still be the top gaming console for years to come thanks to Microsoft's inability to understand gaming.

TBF the Eidos team that they bought made those games. Sure they published it, but it isn't the same as saying there;'s been a good FF (or other base-Square Enix game) in recent times.

Oh, I'm not worried. Believe that. Ms didn't just post over a billion in losses so I'm sure they are ok with that. A healthy ps business is not only good for sony but for ms as well. The other parts, ms probably doesn't care about.

@sub. what you're failing to realize is that the rest of Sony can go down the $#@!ter and it wouldn't really do much for or against the PS division. in fact, it already went down the $#@!ter. they already sold off vaio.

so no, if anything, the Xbox division needs all the sales it can get...sorry to burst your bubble.

I think they should have kept their share in SE.

They could be big in the Mobile space, and it would be prudent for Sony to keep a diversified(kind of) portfolio. 8% is quite a significant chunk, this values SE at $350 million ?

Sony bought Square shares when they were really on the ropes. It helped to stabilize Square although they ended up merging with Enix. As far as being a stock, it is pretty flat and down from its highs. Sony having Square-Enix stock didn't buy a board position and wasn't really buying any influence with the games, almost all going multi-plat. Since Sony bought that percentage of Square in the 80's so they are probably making money by selling it, even if the stock has been underperforming for a long time.

Crystal Dynamics is not inherently square.

Sony did a good job and by selling its share. Square Enix isn't doing good any more as before and their titles are going down slowly and not popular.
