Halo Composer Terminated Without Cause from Bungie

Veteran game composer Martin O’Donnell has been terminated by Bungie.

“I’m saddened to say that Bungie’s board of directors terminated me without cause on April 11, 2014,” O’Donnell wrote on Twitter.

O'Donnell began his career in music doing TV and radio jingles before moving into games when his company, TotalAudio, did sound design work for the 1997 game Riven. After working on Bungie's Myth series, Oni, and an ambitious secret project that would go on to become Halo: Combat Evolved, O’Donnell joined Bungie full-time just 10 days before Microsoft acquired the studio in June, 2000. He then worked on the Halo series, from the iconic theme of the original through to Halo: Reach. His highly-acclaimed and award-winning scores for Halo and Halo 2 are considered among the best of their kind.

O’Donnell was composing music for the upcoming Destiny (working alongside Paul McCartney at one stage).

Martin O’Donnell is exceptionally talented. His music is a fundamental component that makes the Halo games what they are. I can listen to any of the OST's from the games and retrace good memories of the series.

Him being fired from the project(s) like this is weird. Really weird. Hopefully we get some additional info about why.

MS would be incredibly stupid if they didn't snap him up for 343, hell no why stop there, let him work on any of their projects he wants.

Do they mean he is made redundant rather than fired? Lots of companies are saving money by downsizing.

That's really stupid to hear. The Halo series was not my favorite, but the music was definitely iconic and beautifully composed. Maybe a few people on the board were smoking some crack that day.

Yeah this is definitely weird. Not like he's some director or producer and was pushed out due to conflicting visions.

Definitely unexpected news. Martin's tweet and Bungie's response read very differently too. It's a shame that he was terminated as I enjoyed his music in Halo 2, despite not being a big fan of the series.

I would turn on Halo 2 just to let the music at the main menu cycle through. It's powerful and beautiful.

As someone who adored Halo back then, it brings some serious nostalgia for me. The soft piano playing is almost tear-jerking.

I know I'm different from the others but this is my favorite Halo- track of all time. :3
Man who chase after bus get exhausted, man who run in front of bus get tired
Man who masturbates in class has firm grip of subject at hand
Woman who sink in man's arms soon have arms in man's sink

This is sad to hear, all of the Halo's with him had excellent soundtracks. I can't wait to hear Destiny.
