Sony develops 185 terabyte capacity magnetic tape cartridge!

    http://www.extremetech.com/computing...b-tapes-3700-t

. Sony has announced that it has developed a new magnetic tape material that demolishes the previous 29.5GB record, and can hold a whopping 148GB per square inch, making it the new record holder of storage density for the medium. If spooled into a cartridge, each tape could have a mind-boggling 185TB of storage. Again, to compare, that’s 3,700 dual-layer 50GB Blu-rays (a stack that would be 14.3 feet or 4.4 meters high, incidentally). In fact, one of these tapes would hold five more terabytes than a $9,305 hard drive storage array.

I for one had no idea cassette TAPE was still used for data storage... I had no idea sony were working to increase the capacity... My question though... is WHY?

How much money did they throw away here on R&D? if only they pumped that money into nand flash technology research.

Its a company of mad scientists and inventors, creating crazy things. I remember the rolly [a programmable, dancing robot MP3 player!], man that thing was sick, but utterly useless. they made it just because they could, to show off their technical prowess.

Apparently the corporate data magnetic storage market has seen 23% growth last year. perhaps its profitable.

Tape is still used, if you need to store a lot of data but don't have to have it readily available these tapes are quite impressive.

This is insanely cheap and small for the data size it offers. I'm sure the NSA would be interested... It's useful for mass data storage.

The issue is mainly read times. Far too slow to really be useful.

Slow isn't an issue when used for backing up data.

i don't think so because it's not in disc form.

unless they sell some sort of an addon, which i highly doubt would be popular.

Nah, it'd be too slow to use on a gaming console.

Tape and film are also still some of the best formats for archival purposes.

You know, not everything is created destined to land in the consumers hands. Businesses and other firms use technologies that are decades ahed of evolving into something we will use/evey meant to end up in our hands.

This has nothing to do with the PS4, and won't even be a consumer product. It's for large scale backup, not general purpose storage.

No. What's next, the PS4 making toast in the morning?

This was an incredible story to me, and I got it when I heard it was a magnetic tape backup storage vessel and not a "cassette tape" for songs that the mainstream media kept calling it which was wrong. There is 2 questions or things I don't get, 1 is how much would this cost in general and 2, isn't magnetic media unreliable compared to the media advances we have now? For long term archive storing, I wouldn't trust magnetic at all. It can also degrade faster than optical or SS.

Magnetic tape lasts a lot longer than an HD would. I think 150 years before it disintegrates AFAIK. And backing up to tape is used A LOT in the film industry and televsion.
