Develop Awards 2014: Mark Cerny named Development Legend

PS4 system architect will pick up his prize in person in Brighton on July 9th
Mark Cerny will be named Development Legend at this year's Develop Industry Excellence Awards.
The video games icon will join an elite few to pick up the prestigious accolade. Previous recipients include the likes of Tim Sweeney, Mark Rein, David Perry, Peter Molyneux, David Braben, Charles Cecil, Phil Harrison and Ian Livingstone.
The award acknowledges Cerny’s significant contribution to the games industry throughout his impressive career.
His debut game at age 18 was Marble Madness for Atari in 1984, the first release in a sparkling career that saw him travel the world working on major hits such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone 3, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
Most recently Cerny is celebrated for being the mastermind behind the technical architecture of Sony’s PS4 console. The device for which he was lead system architect has already sold over seven million units, just six months after release – a games industry record.
Cerny will collect the award in person at the Develop Awards 2014 in Brighton on Wednesday, July 9th.

well, there's no doubt that cerny sort of brought console gaming to a new level. we have the potential to now play indies and PC ports.

that is a huge deal imo. my problem has always been that i enjoyed some PC games but did not bother with it. now, i can at least hope that some of my favorites would make it, planet side 2 being one.

it's such a simple idea and yet has worked so well. i also think MS had a great idea but their execution and timing is just wrong. they don't seem to be trying much for gaming so far...we'll see at E3.

It's still a chuckle to think about Cerny kept in solitary confinement when Sony went into stealth mode in 2007, then letting him out of his cage for the Feb 2013 reveal. Then, during the whole time these pipsqueak "game journalists" (plus xbox loyalist pundits) were loudly trumpeting that the PS3 was probably Sony's last video game console, he was working on challenging entire established concepts in video game console architecture. He was system architect and his rethinking of videgame console hardware architecture isn't fully appreciated yet. It wasn't without rapid development in multicore CPU's and rapid advancement in GPU's, both at lower wattage thanks to nanometer shrink at fabs. It was a big gamble to go with the continguous GDDR5, when it was just emerging and expensive. Since then, graphics cards are going GDDR5 as VRAM standard and volume sales are bringing down prices. He deserves the award although it is kind of a wonder what he is working on now in the background?

I get the feeling all those leaks etc were done by him and the technology strategists on purpose, to make sure PS4 and durango were both on x86.

I mean it can't be a co-incidence both went for x86 architecture, they probably leaked basic architecture and specs to dev studios close to microsoft, so they would take the hint. probably low balled the specs, 4 GB ram, low power stock APU. Perhaps our Agent Phil Harrison (bless you) fed them this info.

So not only did he get the tech right, he could have hoodwinked the competition into creating a lower specd, overpriced machine.

I'm guessing you're referring to Crash Bandicooth? Because it's in good time after the PS4 launch. There's a lot of others that deserves that recognition too.

That and a lot of other iconic characters/games. So happy he's sticking to making platformers too, I wish ND did.
