Rare is evaluating what to do after Kinect, says Phil Spencer

Xbox head Phil Spencer confirms Microsoft is working closely with U.K. developer Rare to evaluate the studio's future now that Kinect peripherals are optional for Xbox One systems, OXM reports.

Despite the studio's history developing GoldenEye 007 and Donkey Kong Country, Rare was retooled as a flagship Kinect studio, releasing its first Kinect project Kinect Sports in 2010. Rare continued with this franchise, releasing Kinect Sports: Season Two and Kinect Sports Rivals.

"[Rare has] just come off the successful launch of Kinect Sports Rivals," said Spencer. "I think I've heard a few times from people asking about Rare they're in the process of evaluating what they want to do next, and we're working closely with them to see what their new project will be.

"And I've also laughed when people have tried to use the word, what I 'force' them to do if you're around any independent studio, or like Rare a studio that's independent-minded, you'll know that forcing a studio to do something is never a successful equation. So they're free to look at all different kinds of opportunities, they always have been, and we're having a great time trying to work out with them what their next game might be, but we have nothing to announce right now."

Eh. Without the original studio creators, it's really just Rare in name only. Perhaps they can be re-tooled and revive their old franchises or something.

Tim and Chris Stamper (the founders of Rare) haven't done anything since leaving. Clearly they weren't happy with Microsoft's "force" of direction and left. Then with the rest of the key staff leaving Microsoft simply gave them a direction of Kinect games, they didn't sell well and they fired some employees around 2010 I think, Rare have just been going downhill since the key personnel left.

that's insane. so not only they had a brain drain, they actually fired more people down the road. weird that those people didn't end up somewhere else. they were talented.

Yeah, pretty much what Lefein said. Rare in name only. The Stampers were the heart and soul and seems like they have banished themselves from the world of gaming.

    please define "didn't sell well?

    Sept 2012.
The Kinect Sports franchise – comprising of launch title Kinect Sports and its follow-up Kinect Sports Season 2 – has sold over six million units worldwide, Microsoft announced today.

Confirmation of the sales figure came in US press release announcing the release of Kinect Sports Ultimate Collection – both titles, plus the All-Access Pass add-on.

You are watching first hand what it looks like when MS dismantles a game studio, as they have done with well over a dozen now. MS didn't order the new Rare after the buyout to only develop for Kinect. However, MS management urged Rare to focus only on Kinect games, that was a few years ago. And you have to really have a short memory if you don't remember MS insisting Kinect was absolutely integrated and crucial to the XBO, so Rare had that iron-clad commitment. So, now the iron-clad commitment has rusted and dropped like a hot potato. Rare was saying their development team was leaning more to tablet and smart phone casual games before the media hoopla about how they were going to be a major XBO developer. Game dev studios at Microsoft just tend to dissipate and disappear over time, the management hardly aware of their game studios dissolving.

This is like a live year by year story of what EA have done with studio's they've taken over like Bullfrog and Maxis heck Pandemic the creators of Mercenaries 1 & 2 didn't last a few years until M2 came out and was a disaster they then got folded in EA's other devs and just vanished all while the CEO of Pandemic laughed off towards the bank

What gets lost in discussions about Kinect is the technology being used. The early indicators MS wasn't sincere about it's commitment to gesture control (aka camera combination) was when they not only didn't buy rights to the technology or try to buy the company that invented the Kinect. Nobody now seems to remember we went through a long period where many xbox fans were insisting the Kinect was totally invented by Microsoft, an American company. Then, it was revealed the technology was actually being licensed from an Israeli company. As time went on, we learned MS didn't have any rights at all. Then, that didn't matter, MS made a superior system with Kinect2. All of a sudden, it was being pointed out how the Kinect processing was sluggish, not high enough resolution, how the Kinect2 used all new, different technology developed internally by MS crack R&D lab, a totally American lab with a large part devoted to the XBO. Then, Primesense, the real company behind Kinect, was bought by Apple.

What happened to all the oohing-ahhhing over how Kinect was "integrated" into Forza? Or how cool it was used in Ghost Recon, almost "essential" to the game, when it was only for weapon loadout menus. How does it go from being absolutely essential to the total game experience to an option if you feel like it? This kind of insincere stance on positions can be very disheartening to devs and results in them wanting to leave the MS corporate environment.

i'm confused, are you saying (part of your point) Kinect 2 isn't as good as Kinect 1?

Not at all. The main point is that MS didn't even believe in the technology to buy out Primesense. I have an Asus Xtion which is the PC version of the Kinect, and it takes a pretty high end PC to use it, and it just won't run on GPU's less than a couple years old. The point of that is the original Kinect didn't have on-board processing power and MS thought that was the big problem with lag (remember Kinect Star Wars? swing light saber, wait for the light saber to swing in the game). MS decided to put the vision/motion processing on-board the Kinect 2, that is why it is so big. No real way to tell if Kinect2 would have been much better, since it looks like MS is abandoning it now, just like they have done with dozens of other hardware lines. The main point is all this is nothing new, it's the same old MS, try to dominate through brute force, find out finesse beats brute force, give up, take their ball and go home.
