    Introducing Steam In-Home Streaming

    Introducing Steam In-Home Streaming

    Announcement - Valve
    12:15

In-Home Streaming, a new feature of Steam, is now released to all users. Players who have multiple computers at home can immediately take advantage of the new feature. When you log into Steam on two computers on the same network, they automatically connect, allowing you to remotely install, launch, and play games as though you were sitting at the remote PC.

Steam In-Home Streaming allows you to play your PC games on lower-end computers such as a laptop or home theater PC, or a computer running another operating system such as OS X, SteamOS, or Linux.

When you play a game using In-Home Streaming, video and audio are sent through your home network from your high-end gaming PC to another device in your home. From here, your keyboard, mouse, and controller input is sent back to the remote computer.
    Pretty cool.

Let me know how well it works. Doubt I'll find a use for it, but the concept is interesting.

Works pretty good, had to lower the res so it fit nicer on the laptop.

These screens are of the new Wolfenstein game using the "balanced" profile inthe streaming settings also you can see the latency.

    "Beautiful" Quality streaming setting
Looks like its aroun 16Mbit for this setting and 10Mbit for "balanced" you can see the finer details inthis setting whereas in other settings they are blurry

Damn it I wanted to make the thread.

I really want to try this out too, I would imagine that playing Metro on such a low res that you can jack the graphics up to mental heights and make it super pretty and running smoothly too.

Latency isn't too bad since its local network, 30ms at most according tot he debug info, might be able to get it lower or at least stable instead of fluctuating If I hard wired the laptop, but that is for another time tomorrow.

It even works using non steam games, I gotBF4 working too

Doesnt like screen shots being taken on the remote client.

    About to test it myself.

Edit: It works decent enough I guess. It's relatively response, but not enough for shooters and the like. Good for indie titles and slower paced games.

Using a wire doesn't make much difference to the latency figures.
I noticed its only 60fps maximum, I tried quake live which works best at 125fps but its capped on the server sie to 60FPS or rather 59 as it said on the screen.
I did notice the less demanding the game the lower the latency, I guess it makes sense since more CPU time is used up when the game is demanding.

Star Citizen isn't with steam, is it..? So.. As far as I've noticed, it's literally only working with Steam games.. Non-steam games that have been added won't work I guess. Shame, but for the rest it seems to work. I've yet to test it out (on my Macbook) but I'm waiting for a time when I actually would use this, i.e. when it's summer and I'm outside with my laptop

You log in on Steam on the PC where your games are installed. e.g. for me that would be my gaming pc (duh )
Then I can go onto my laptop, log in on Steam and 'stream' the game from my PC via Steam to my laptop. The game actually runs on your PC, you can see it run if you look at it, and you can play it through your laptop. There's some choices like audio through PC or streaming device etc.

    It's a neat feature

Non steam games do work but are not supported. While I did get BF4 to work it was a bit problematic due to how is launched, in the browser, but Quake live was no problem since it now uses an executable.

Nah, this type of thing has been around lot longer than PS now in other guises developed by other companies. I remember doing it on my PS3 via Linux.

You've been able to do this in the late 90's too but only via wired network. It's only with today's technology where it is actually useful now.
