Iran Hangs Billionaire Convicted of Fraud

The billionaire businessman who was the mastermind behind Iran's biggest fraud case was hanged Saturday in Tehran.

Authorities say Mahafarid Amir Khosravi was put to death at Tehran's notorious Evin Prison.

Khosravi was found guilty of having used forged documents to obtain credit at Iran's top financial institutions in the $2.6 billion scam. He bought numerous assets, including a steel company.

At least 20 other people were arrested in connection with the scheme. Most are facing lengthy prison sentences, but at least three have received death sentences.

One of the suspects in the case fled to Canada. Mahmoud Reza Khavari, a former chief of a major Iranian bank, is on the Islamic Republic's most wanted list.

The trials raised questions about corruption at senior levels in Iran's tightly controlled economy during the administration of its former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who dismissed the allegations as a smear campaign conducted by his opponents.

It's nice to know that some countries take a no tolerance approach to fraud. I honestly think this is justified considering that this person only got rich because he able to forge documentation. Serves him right. Justice has been done. I only wish that approach would be taken here against everyone who perpetrates actions like this and becomes a billionaire in doing so.

    Hardcore.

I agree with the death sentence for murder and extreme violence. But forging documents?

Killing someone over money is something I cannot agree with. Iran is pretty barbaric though so it's not too surprising. But that's for another topic.

Unfortunately, cheating your way to the top here in America would get you a friendly slap on the back and an invite to the Wall Street balcony to laugh at the peasants.

Not saying that hanging him is the right move but actual harsh punishment is good news.

I agree with the death sentence for murder and extreme violence. But forging documents?
Well, by forging documents you can do even worse things than just killing one person.

Less barbaric than this country. At least they don't wage preemptive and undeclared wars in the name of "Democracy", "Freedom" and "international norms". Cheating your way to the top where you can affect a potential million or more lives should be punishable by death.

Bernard Madoff says different. He was sentenced to 150 years for his fraud.

Too lenient considering how many lives he destroyed.

Death sentence should be mandatory for anyone jailed for 20 years and over.
Don't care what the crime is, you go in for that long and your lowly existence is wasting tax dollars that could be better spent elsewhere.

... I can't even begin describing how awful it is that you (and assuredly many others) think this.

Overpopulation is still a large issue and only going to get worse.

Piss in the ocean. The majority of people dont commit crimes to warrant being put to death.

I guess we should keep fighting wars and stop helping people when it comes to healthcare. Hell, let's just put anyone in prison to death.

After all, people are a burden to society. Overpopulation or... something.

Might as well bomb India and China. That would fix the whole problem right away.

The population isn't the issue. Geopolitics, bureaucracy and overall human greed is what's the problem.

That's no reason for someone to be put to death.

I am for change and rehabilitation. Consider this: the prisoners who are rehabilitated return back to the streets, but can't get a job. That in turn makes them go back to crimes. If the job market would give people more chances, we might would have less drug dealers and burglary in this country.

Drug dealing is only a crime because certain business interests warped society into thinking that the "drugs" that are illegal are amoral and bad. Then they made sure that only politicians who had these same business interests' interests in mind ever got into office by way of campaign contributions and financing. You've been played for a fool.
