A moment's silence please for the passing of a friend

    Source

Genuinely saddened to hear this somewhat inevitable announcement. Great little handheld and we still play our PSP (we had two but the red one finally died about 3 months ago). I think our PSP gets more time on it than our Vita and therein lies Sony's problem nowadays in the handheld market.

Anyway, please be upstanding and raise your glasses to the PSP!

Sony will ship its last PlayStation Portable in Japan next month, the company has announced.

The company revealed the news as part of a statement offering Japanese users a discount on Vita products when they trade in their old PSPs (translated by Polygon).
Despite not reaching the heights of Nintendo's competitor DS (154m sold), the PSP has still notched up a respectable 80m units worldwide since it went on sale nearly 10 years ago.
The handheld originally arrived in Japan in late 2004, before turning up in Europe and North America the following year. Sony launched its successor, the Vita, at the end of 2011.

    Already..?
    That's quite fast imo..
Seeing the PS2 made way more years and the Vita is barely being supported..

    EDIT: I just realised..
Sony accidently put all PSP/PS1 classics open to Vita a while ago and closed it again.
They're going to stop with the PSP.
Meaning they'll definitely activate it again soon?

Because I cannot tell you how f'ing p'ssed off I was at trying out the PSP classics running on the Vita by downloading Hannah feking Montana! Of all the games I could have tried it with my impatience got the better of me and I downloaded Hannah Montana. The shame still hurts. If only I knew they were going to take it down again a few hours later I would have made a wiser choice.

Can't believe the psp is almost 10 years old. It feels like 4/5 years to me..

Never owned a PSP but I did try a friend's. I like that it inspired Sony to implement the XMB GUI for the PS3.

I never had much sentiment about the psp other than that it was my first portable home brew device. I even brought it into the Service.. (fun fact: just now realized that I played Crisis Core on it!) Yeah, I accidentally brought it with me in my cargos during military drills. 'course the screen got wasted, haha..

ha! I can imagine. When I was in the service, there was only the original gameboy. Doubt that would survive a single day of drills in the field.
