    1440p vs 4K

    Isn't 4K 4x 1080p, not 8? Edit: you beat me to it

But yeah, 120fps is a beautiful thing to experience. The only drawback of getting a 120Hz monitor is that your turn into a frame rate snob as anything not super smooth drives you nuts. Even when moving the mouse when doing general computer stuff gets annoying at 60Hz

Typically I aim to get my games in the 90-120fps region

i suppose that can be seen as a benefit, even if not a big one.

though on behalf of needing way more pixels on screen that would eat up your GPU anyway.

on a monitor, i always kept AA off (cause i had a mid-ranged GPU), at 900p, the small amount of jaggies didn't bother me.

so i wouldn't care at 1080p and especially not at 1440p.

If you double the dimensions of a square/rectangle it quadruples the area, or pixels in the case of resolution. It is basic maths.

I rarely use AA either but if you have higher res you need it less due to the jaggies being smaller and less obvious.

to put things in perspective. IMAX theatres are generally 6K. the authentic ones are 18K.

standard theatres are (72 ft 53 ft). authentic ones can be up to (117.1 ft x 97.4 ft)

    and we're talking about 4K on a 28" :S that's almost theatre-quality resolution.

UHD (it's not 4k, it's actually UHD) actually makes a massive difference to quality simply because the PPI is so high. The real estate for multitasking is also. Feature wise though the only thing I use my monitors for is turning on and off and the occasional 3D.
see i could see some benefit there, no doubt. but what i'm worried about is how much of a benefit is it?
For me? Well 3D graphics, programming, digital art and design means that generally I have at least ~10 windows open at any one time. It's the reason I want a Titan Z as 3ds Max would be drool worthy in UHD.

UHD would be nice. I just don't fancy building my own version of the LPC, as much as I'd like to.

I always look forward to looking at the PCGamer LPC release screenshots from the latest games. They look a generation ahead already.

Still no word on UK release. I want it now!

I don't think any of us could afford around 10k.

Here you are contemplating moving on to 4k and I'm still working to afford moving on to 1920x1080. The struggle is real.

Anyway, I'd advice going for 1440p for the reasons people have already listed. Scaling, potential framerate, and probably cheaper too. It's the next resolution step up from 1080, and in a few years you can then move on to 4k gaming at 120hz and the other bells and whistles you're used to now.

Truth be told I wouldn't have ever gone 4K until there were dedicated 4K gaming screens so it was always going to be 1440p for me.

Make no mistake I'm very much on the daily grind struggle, I'm just a bit frivolous with my money especially considering I'm never in a position up be.

I'll buy it and regret it for the next month when I'm poor and can't afford food or petrol

BBK, we should have a LAN party at some stage. Would be totally ace. Your TITAN setup, my triple screen setup, and anyone else who wants to get involved. Then we'll see what we can come up with to go up against the LPC.

Titan set up? Don't flatter me! I have a GTX780. Granted it's overclocked and faster but it doesn't have the boutique nature of a Titan haha.

You will never see a difference with 4k on monitors less than 100" unless you are sitting way to close! Stop being a brain washed advertisement zombie! 4k is a marketing scam to get you to spend more money!

^^ not true. 4K alone gives you more real estate. And I don't buy the 100" argument either.

4K is awesome and i'm sure you'll see the difference even on a 32" screen. but the higher you go, the better it is, up to a certain point. yeah, not 100" necessarily lol but i'd say it would be beneficial up to 60-70"

In terms of movies yeah fine, TV sets have only jumped up in resolution in the last decade, prior to that the 480/576p standard lasted for well over 30 years (probably longer) TV broadcasting is still maximum 1080i and only on the HD channels and certainly the current gen consoles and probably next gen consoles will not be able to push 4k, adding to that the vast majority of Blu rays are only 1080p. I think there is more 4k porn than actual 4k movies.
Whereas Computer resolutions have been increasing gradually over the years. It is called progress.
If you do not want a 4k monitor you do not buy one.

I play some games at UHD downscaled and notice a MASSIVE difference over 1080 on the same monitor. It's a 23" monitor and I've at least a metre from the screen. Are you trying to tell me that I can't see a difference? Here's one of my screenshots: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile.../?id=262665524

yeah, i don't believe there's no improvement. there is certainly. i'm sure even at the smallest level. retina display on iPhone 5 makes a huge difference but we wouldn't have known before.

point is though, 4K makes hell of a lot more difference the higher in size you go.

The monitor is finally up online. 680 at Scan. I didn't think I would pay more than 600 for it but I'm tempted to go over budget. Double checked Benchmarks and the game I'll play the most, BF4, runs at a solid 52FPS with all the settings at Ultra and considering my 780 is about 10% faster than the stock one I should be able to hit minimum of 60fps no problem. Might have to drop down AA but with a bigger resolution loss of AA shouldn't be a massive problem.

Getting exited. Need desk space now
