    Morpheus Hardware Development Complete

Looks like we can expect an announcement soon.

GamesIndustry.biz: To Oculus VR there is a huge hype. In fact Oculus Rift is still in the prototype phase and the company is working on resolution and technical subtleties. How far are you with Project Morpheus?

Uwe Bassendowski: The development of the hardware is complete. Now this hardware requires appropriate software and this is a lengthy process. We will then publish exactly when we start to have a portfolio of x games and seen to view a portfolio of other x games. If we can ignore that, then it is time to go into the market.Previously, this makes no sense. But working on the issue very many studios and when the say they have clarity as to when they can take a possible release in the eye, then we can make it into a release strategy.

Morpheus has looked pretty complete from what we have seen, the consumer model might have slight differences but they look ready to build when the light turns green.

if OR devs are abandoning it (and for good reasons, $#@! FB) then that is a bigger deal than anything for Morpheus. i really hope people don't support OR. not after FB acquired it. they are evayl.

If sony can shoe horn in VR with the PS4 like they did with Blu-ray on the PS3, it should give them a pretty good edge. There would be a decent chance a million or 2 of the current PS4 owners are on the ball with Morpheus and are gagging for it.

But this is SONY and they really need to nail a market (PC) that really has little money going directly to them apart from Morpheus profits.

VR is AMAZING! I got to try an older model of OR and an earlier build of EVE valkyrie and EVE Fanfest last year and it BLEW my mind. It's no gimmick IMHO, it's an amazing evolution that will provide a lot of really cool experiences. The immersion was intense and it worked exactly how you'd like it to.

What excites me is that comment ND made about how VR would allow for the ultimate horror game. I'd bet my left nut that they are working on a VR game.

An optional peripheral can never gain as much market penetration as something standardized, no matter how good the optional peripheral is. Sony won the optical format war against hddvd/toshiba to a large extent because of the ps3, because every ps3 sold meant an additional blu-ray player sold. Doing 1 or 2 million (or even more if it can be used directly on pc) with the morpheus would be good, but it would not come close to blu-ray numbers. And obviously having morpheus standardized across all ps4's is not an option because of cost considerations. The standalone device should be going for + .3k - 4k usd.

Morpheus could be used for some exclusive 3D movie experiments by sony too.
Very promising stuff. I really hope Elite: Frontier and No Man's Sky work on this.

Even though this is for OR, this could also imply to VR in general. Morpheus being the case. Which ever headset makes it big will be the standard in the VR market.
