NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880 and GTX 870 coming this fall

    Source
SweClockers are among the most accurate sources of NVIDIA leaks you can find. Today they report that second generation Maxwell will be released in fourth quarter. It is believed that the launch of GeForce GTX 880 and GeForce GTX 870 is set somewhere between October and November.

First GeForce GTX 800 graphics cards are expected to launch on second generation Maxwell architecture, which is supposedly updated with ARM cores.

From what we’ve learned NVIDIA has completely canceled GM100 chips. Full scale development is now focused on GM200 parts.

Leaked import-export data from Zauba already revealed that NVIDIA is preparing GM204 processor, which is most likely a successor to GK104. It is said that GM204 would equipped with 8GB GDDR5 memory and 256-bit interface. It could be a mobile variant though. We already covered this story more than a month ago, and we are not really sure, why was it such hot topic this week.

Last, but not least we should mention that GM20x GPUs are still using 28nm fabrication process.
It is highly unlikely we are going to see any 18/20nm graphics processor this year.
This is super tempting but I think I'll continue waiting for the 900 series. Anyone else going to upgrade to these?

Since I need a card sooner rather than later I doubt it.

No idea, but I'd guess probably early 2016. They generally go by a 1 - 1.5 year iteration but it really depends on their development towards the 20nm scale (which was skipped for the 800 series) and how ATI responds with their own cards.

    500 series - November 2010
    600 series - March 2012 (1.5 years)
    700 series - April 2013 (1 year)
    800 series - Fall 2014 (1.5 years)
    900 series - ???

faaaarrrk! no way am i waiting that long!

My 8320 is capable of 100+FPS at stock, the 660 only puts out ~40-50fps. I can't wait that long to upgrade. Maybe i'll see then they drop the GTX1080? 1070? man, their naming convention is going to be messed up after the 900 series

I think I'll keep my 780 until the next series of cards at least.

New benchmarks to look forward to though

It will be about ~3 years for me when the 800 series is released so I'll be picking one of these up at launch, except this time I will wait a bit longer for the custom fan solutions to be available. I was going to do that with the KFA2 custom version but went with the KFA2 reference model in the end. Still though the difference between then GTX295 and the GTX680 was unbelievable.

This will be the time I'll purchase a new monitor then too.

But I have a reason to go for 4K at least. I hardly play games despite sitting at this very PC for most of the day working.

I'm going to use my old 1920x1200 monitor in portrait mode alongside it so I can use it for graphic design.

Also I think I might put my three monitors on the market within the next month. The question is do I put them up separately or as a trio?

Yeah see you do professional work. I do gaming. You'll defintely benefit from it. I'm all about those Hz and G-Sync man!

I'd say definitely separately if you can. Even if you got £150 for each you'd only be £50 out of pocket, for the time you've had them, that's not a bad deal.

I'm not sure what I'll do with my screen when my new one comes. Could put it on eBay to offset some of the cost but I'm not sure how much I'd get for it.

Not sure I'll be able to get £150 for each monitor but hopefully around £100 per monitor.

Yea I'll probably upgrade to the 880, ready for The Witcher 3, DA:I, and Star Citizen. I've been holding out for a while - I'm still on a 5850.

I'm just wondering whether to go SLi or even purchase a new CPU. If I went with SLi then I would, without doubt, need a new PSU too, but I love my Seasonic PSU, you can't even hear it.

Will probably be getting a couple of these for my new build later this year... if they're worth it, that is.

Really hope 8xx series would finally make improvement on ROPs, TEx units etc.
Last time we saw proper upgrade to those parts was with 4xx series after that it's been mostly about speed.

Been waiting for this upgrade to happen so I can finally upgrade my aging rig, Although now it seems that the time frame for a upgrade, has moved up to Intels Tock and Skylake architecture.
Hoping for a L4 cache, 512 bit AVX and improved integrated GPU part for some additional compute work.

    Should be enough for Rift.

I think if you shoved a baked potato into your system it would be a better upgrade than what you have now.
