Rumor From @Tidux: Sony Looking At Crytek

Just saw this via twitter. If Sony were to acquire Crytek, it would really help out their AAA games studios.

Also with Morpheus up and coming, this could have a huge impact on that technology going forward

Obviously just a rumor at this point, but what do you guys think if this were to happen?

That would be a megaton off of name value alone.

Crytek could join Guerrilla in the ranks of great technical achievers that absolutely suck at story and substance.

Maybe they can take over the FPS duties and allow Guerilla to venture on and do other things. They certainly don't need to be doing any more FPS at all--Killzone or otherwise.

Capcom is also said to be in trouble at the moment, I'd think it'd be more likely them over Crytek since they are already collaborating over projects.

Now that, would be the biggest possible megaton as far as acquisitions go.

I don't think Sony is in a position to be buying other companies right now, given its financial situation. But deepening the first-party line-up could be good in the long run.

Capcom and Crytek have always been ones for multi-platform, purchasing either of them I imagine would have to have certain permissions - especially CryTek due to their PC influence.

Capcom being owned by Sony would deal a huge blow to the competition. Cut the fat from the teams and keep the best talent around. No more multiplats to worry about. Customized ps4 engines. Spark up sales in Japan and everywhere else.

Tidux was wrong about a bunch of E3 predictions. I wouldn't listen to this guy.

Kraptaku is reporting Crytek UK employees are not showing up for work and there has been trouble getting paychecks. Hate to give Kraptaku the click-through but here it is:

    http://kotaku.com/sources-crytek-uks...ave-1599923133
Crytek UK staff no longer going to work
It would seem like EA would be interested in picking them up, but who knows. The Ryse 2 negotiations are supposed to have collapsed over an argument who owns the IP. It sounds like Microsoft is no longer showing up at game devs with suitcases of money to buy out IP's. It would be a real shame to see Crytek go under.

Some of the employee's would be good working at Killzone studio and if they do buy Crytek which i'd say is unlikely they have ownership of the cryengine.

Same thing I thought, although I played through Homefront with guilty pleasure. It made me feel dirty so I would have to shower after play sessions. Just something about fighting against North Koreans. At least, that game is keeping some employed.

Sony is not going to buy whole Crytek, of course not. It wouldn't be wise.
But some studios inside Crytek, sure why not. Or just people, who know what they are doing.

Crytek uk is worthless... Most of the main employees at free radical are gone.

Only thing i want Sony to acquire from Crytek is Tiago Sousa. Everything else can rot.

But Tidux is bull$#@! that was 80% wrong about E3. The Crytek troubles broke as "news" over 2 weeks ago on Gaf, and now Tidux is jumping in on it with his bull$#@!.

I could see Sony acquiring the Cry-Engine. It certainly would make Gran Turismo look hawt and smexy. Who knows, maybe they could use the engine for a Legend of Dragoon reboot. I shudder in anticipation at the mere thought of it.

I don't see it happening, when was the last time Crytek made anything good? They should have stuck to being a hardcore PC Dev.

They are still free to use their engine. Remember that the CryEngine has so many companies using it across not just games but other forms of media that if Sony did purchase CryTek and made the engine Playstation only, then that would be a major disaster not just to CryTek and the games industry, but to the entertainment, media, and medical industry as a whole (yes I said medical).

    indeed.
There is also possibility of buying some IP or just wait for talent to become available for hire.

I doubt the Sony Corporation is so weak-willed as to make the engine PlayStation exclusive. Maybe on the gaming side which is more than fair in my book but not other industries. More likely than not, they would probably keep contracts intact and try to further as many of the relationships as they can in a bid to keep revenue sources incoming.

I don't think Sony would even be able to make the engine Playstation only anyway, the contracts that CryTek have in place (in-particularly PC) would pretty much prevent this without some hefty fines (contract breaking). A lot of these contracts I would imagine are going on for several years.

Star Citizen for instance has 3 members from CryTek helping out on the project and have a contract until the game is released. One of the contracts was to show off the engine and how it can be used - I'm sure those that know will automatically think "The Next Great Starship" and you'll be right.

Anyone who gets Crytek or Capcom on board would be making money at the end of the day. People underestimate just how many people love their games. Throw some funds at exclusive projects and there's no telling what they'd come up with. I'm always under the impression that dedicated exclusives will always come out on top over multiplats any day of the week. It's all about how much effort is put into it.

Agree with this. Just too much about this doesn't make sense to me. Capcom would make a lot more sense.
