Microsoft to lay off 18k staff including parts of Global Xbox Marketing Team

Microsoft is reportedly planning its biggest job cuts for five years. Bloomberg reports that the reductions will likely affect marketing, engineering, and the former Nokia employees that make up Microsoft’s new mobile group. The cuts could be the biggest yet, after Microsoft reduced its headcount by 5,800 in 2009, and reductions are also expected to affect divisions that overlap with the Nokia phone business. Some job cuts will also reportedly hit groups like the global Xbox marketing team.

Microsoft currently has 127,104 employees as of June 5th, and previous reports from Gigaom suggest that the software maker might be planning to cut as much as 10 percent of its workforce. It’s not immediately clear when the rumored job cuts will take place, but Bloomberg suggests it could be as soon as this week. Microsoft’s annual sales meeting takes place on July 22nd, the same day that the company reports its latest earnings results. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has promised to provide more details on the company’s plans "to focus on our core" on July 22nd, with job cuts expected as part of the restructuring and integration of Nokia staff.

Just like Sony's layoffs...not a big deal in the grand scheme of things..no indication of how Xbox is doing as a brand

though what's odd is that their first party doesn't seem to be putting out anything and we know they hired a bunch of studios in the recent past...maybe they were replacing other people? who knows.

though the marketing one is interesting, especially since Sony is reportedly doing the same.

maybe it has to do with the fact that both consoles are out and the vigorous marketing isn't needed as much? or they're just trying to cut back.

Microsoft has just announced shutting down Xbox Entertainment Studios. They are also laying off almost the entire Nokia staff.

didn't know they owned Nokia. i guess they're also slimming down like Sony was. e.g. Vaio sell off.

but shut down Xbox Entertainment Studios? what games did they produce again?

    EDIT: wow http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Entertainment_Studios

that was what was going to tie in with Kinect. i figured something was going to change after Kinect was practically taken out of the console. told you guys, their TV $#@! was just to get ad revenues and collect data for ad revenues.

otherwise they wouldn't axe something that they just started and was one of their main focuses.

Looks like more recent news is showing the job cuts to be 18,000:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/18/bu...8000-jobs.html

About 12,500 of the job cuts are from Nokia.

Honestly Ms could trim the fat a bit more. They have a ton of studios on Xbox side that appear to do nothing.

Not surprised about Nokia but XES? They need more assets in their 1st party studios, not less.

Right you are, had a brain fart for a sec. MS needs more 1st party studios, that point still stands.

I wonder if this will affect the Halo series?

well if it makes you feel any better, i also thought they were a first party studio that made games. i think it will affect it but that's just my guess. looking at the wiki, they were involved in some series.

Looks like Microsoft has effectively shut down the Xbox Entertainment Studios, which was supposed to create original TV content for Xbox Live, with the exception of the proposed HALO TV shows.

I actually expect them to restructure and actually keep up with the technology instead of always falling behind.

Surface 3 is the perfect exemple of that. To me, it's what the macbook air should have evolved into. For the first time (speaking of hardware) MS is ahead of Apple with something that should have hit the designers in the face 2-3 years ago.

nah....not me. The hybrid laptop/tablet idea just doesn't work for me. I prefer Apple's approach to design. Frankly, I doubt many Macbook owners are going to ditch in favor of Surface. Windows, in general, has become such a muddled mess.

The news in the Seattle area is that the layoff will be closer to 20,000.

You folks need to know the same things you have been saying for 10 years was under Balmer as CEO. This new CEO is nothing like Balmer. Balmer admitted he didn't play video games but he watched his daughters play video games. This new CEO looks like he has never played a video game in his life, strictly high level computer science. With Kaz, you can see him kicking back every once in awhile and playing a game.

Start adding it up. The new CEO has already said Xbox is not a 'core' brand, that the future of Xbox may be mobile, and now shut down Xbox Entertainment Studio, which was being hyped as the new springboard for XBO into TV and movies. By laying off almost the entire Nokia staff, this new CEO is saying he doesn't see anything of value there, meaning whatever Nokia had beyond brand name, the programmers at MS can do better.

The Japan launch of the XBO is going to be a dud, an expensive dud that shows no prospect of ever making the investment money back. The next indicator gauge is going to be the MS presence at Gamescom, if there is one. MS already has over 18,000 Finns hopping mad.

Meh, the changes are easy to learn or get around. No reason for a competent individual to complain about that in particular.
