Up To 6TB Drive tested with PS4

Here's a guy showing off that he snaked a SATA cable out to his 6TB external drive and that it functions quite nicely.

I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a snap on cover replacement expansion for the PS4 (maybe it functions as a Camera Dock on top of the system too, since the PS4 nearly originally had the camera as an internal component and for those of you who know and have one, the PS4 Camera is supposed to be placed about knee height or 36 inches above the ground, not much higher.

I'd love to see a doc where it snapped on to replace the PS4's access panel, took a 3.5in HDD , had a fan to cool it that was LARGE and low noise/no noise or had a heatsink for it, and perhaps the camera could snap into it or settle infront of it. Dunno. But it's so easy to add 3.5 in support to the system with that access panel being top mounted.
I'd power that via an angled black USB jack that i'd plug into the front and snake around the back to where the cable would lead into the expansion. It could also house a USB switch/hub as well. Not an awful idea i don't think.

Anyway, this fella does a good job of showing you it works fine.

Interesting idea, but why would we need such a big hard drive connected to the PS4?

    Digital games.

I'd love for them to make a cheaper, 2.5".

Because games like, "The Last of Us: Remastered" take up 50GB for installation and because after enough games of that size doing that, you tend to run out of space.

I just clear my HD, there is no need for me to have that much space.

Speaking of hard drives, does the PS4 support external ones? Pretty sure I heard somewhere it did but just need some clarification

It does support external USB drives, but is quite limited on what you can use them for. (no games etc.)

If you connect external drive using the Ps4 internal SATA connector (like in OP), it works just like normal ps4 HDD.

Many thanks for that, will have to try it when I get enough spare cash to afford a 6tb hard drive

For me it just points out that there's no real current limit on the file system size imposed by SONY.
    Very nice indeed.

The 2TB M9t works now, I have it installed. Price wise it's a steal, unless you just have a spare laying around.

It actually seems a bit swifter than the stock drive, and HUGE.
Excise moderately carefully from one of these.

Now we just need native MKV and so forth codec drivers. Ultimate Media Hub.

My neighbor asked me how i could make the PS4 they bought for their nephew's birthday faster.
I was like 'uhm... your going to hate me'... So, were getting the 1TB EVO samsung SSD drive for it.
I showed him how it works on my laptop and explained that things will load faster. They were like 'lets do it!'.
16th birthday thing, wanted something nobody else will give them, lol.

    That's an EXPENSIVE PS4!!

I purchased a 3TB Seagate Backup Plus external hard drive. I took it apart and ran male to female SATA cables directly to the hard drive, and then in to the PS4.

    Works great.

Pretty much if it can read drives above 2TB then it becomes an unknown on just how big the limit is, could potentially be in the petabyte range if the address space is large enough.

Unfortunately media playback via USB is not available on Ps4 at the moment. It is expected to be added via an update in future.

You mean I can connect that as it were a USB drive to download the installations? I was watching the OP video, how exactly do you do it?
