.. and the sky was full of stars.
Elite: Dangerous will finally have it's standard Beta opened tomorrow and I noticed there isn't a single thread for the game which some of us have been waiting for the last ~20 years. (It is third sequel for Elite 1984, (postmortem talk by Braben).)
Nice description on Frontier was made on Amiga.
Basic idea is to explore a dynamic 400Billion star galaxy and doing what you want.. (trade, explore, pirate, bounty hunt..)
Currently the game is pure space exploration, but expansions will bring ability for a atmospheric flight, landing and walking within a ship and perhaps on planets as well.
They have splendid homepage for the game with all the information you might want.
And wonderful forums.
Here couple of videos with more recent gameplay/visuals.
David Braben on procedural generation. (reason why Elite1 fit the game in 22kB, Frontiers ~500kB fit >100Million star galaxy with atmospheric flight and cities like london. (with working big ben.))
Some impression articles can be found from Rock,Paper shotgun. (Including using Oculus Rift)

To start on a bit of a tangent, No man's Land was quite the surprise during E3, and indeed, quite surprising to see the enthusiasm for these types of games entering the wider market.
Very interesting title, something more people should get into. Not everything need to go pew-pew-boom. The medium can facilitate so much more!
P.S, Congrats on first thread jlippone, lots and lots of info! A nice read...or listen as the case may be
I still occasionally fire up the old Amiga 1200 to play Frontier: Elite 2
I have looked into this, but early access prices are a touch expensive. I'd rather wait until release just like with Star Citizen!
I haven't seen any atmospheric flight though so in that respect it will be a step back from the old Elite 2! Still looks awesome though!
The game is created from ground up with the feature in mind. (Planet generation etc.)

I'm a bit more excited about this than I am Star Citizen. The space genre is booming though
Bit off topic but I always wished I could get into EVE but was a bit too much and slow for me.
Frontier Elite 2 intro, oh how things have changed!
I wonder if the Imperial Courier (the grey ship) will be in Elite Dangerous?! A lot of recognizable ships are in those trailers so here's hoping!
Standard beta has been released with huge change list..
I gave in and took the plunge!
I love it! I did a bit of combat in the starter ship, took out out four enemies at a distress signal, but decided it takes too long with low end equipment so I've gone trader.
I've just brought the Hauler, it's basic, but I can make 4 times the profit per run than with the Sidewinder.

I'm excited hearing about more games like this. I love the explore and this along with No Mans Sky and what ever else comes out should give me my fix.
Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.
I've been playing with a 360 pad, I know it's sacrilege, but the way my set up is it's difficult to use a flight stick or mouse effectively. The pad works surprisingly well though.
I just got myself a Cobra MKIII before logging off last night. It has better cargo space than my hauler and loads of weapon hard points.
I need to do a bit more trading then it will be outfitted with some top end weapons so I can get me some action!!
In the past week or so I've spent a couple hours in Elite with my DK2 and it's a blast. Now I need to buy a flight stick...Any recommendations?i7 4770 | EVGA GTX 780 ti SC ACX | 32GB
i7 3770 | EVGA GTX 780 ti SC ACX | 16GB
Really depends on price range, but I recommend on reading about HOTAS systems and reviews etc.
Elite and Starcitizen forums have good information on subject.
I cannot really recommend anything as x55 is the only joystick I have tried for the last 10-15 years.
