While impressive video games have become so stagnant in the last 4 years, the best uses I can see for these chips are for calculations and other large processing batches.

I kind of have to agree with that. And was kinda the reason i went with an AMD CPU when i ordered my PC a few months back.

Modern CPU's Push upward of 100 FPS and are held back by the GPU. And the kicker? The CPU cores we have now aren't even being utilised fully. My aforementioned 8320 seldom reaches 45% loading across 8 cores.

For $1000 you could purchase yourself a pretty beefy GPU. You could even for $600.

When we get to a point where multithreading is incredibly heavy, pushing all cores up to ~80% (even the i7), then i would consider CPU's worth the prices shown. CPU's are way too far ahead of their time atm.

On a side note, AMD must be on to something with it's 'APU' line. Why does intel integrate a GPU into their powerhouse CPU's? It has to be future proofing, yeah?

Yeah, even my stock 2500k is still running circles around even the latest games and programs. Processors on the PC have so much overhead and longevity it's kinda ridiculous.

If you work at retail and sell computers, it's time to make sure you do all your Intel Retail Edge program quizzes and pray that's the next rewards special.

I have a 3930k with 64GB of ram and a 970 with 24gb of ram. I can't see use for anything else for about a decade or so.

Lord, I hope you bought those systems for something other than gaming.

I just bought a 4790k with 16GB of RAM about a month and a half ago. I don't see myself replacing that for many years to come.

I have the 4770 with 16GB RAM and a GTX 650, punches pretty well across the board. I run games at 720p to match my TV so, yeah.

Honestly, I think the CPUs and GPUs are exactly where they should be. The problem is in the software end and it always has been. Developers aren't even fully utilizing the 64-bit computing power these chips have, nor have they tried to be efficient with the resources at their disposal. There is a lot of untapped potential on these chips and everyone who develops is too focused on trivial matters like legacy support to realize that there is a whole segment of the population of advanced power users not being catered to. I shudder to think what a game could actually look like if it was running native on a machine with the specs these gaming rigs often have.

One thing I'd like to point out that is a gripe of mine is the bandwidth allocated to the PCI-E lanes. Why support for only 40 lanes? This should have been bumped up to a minimum of 64 lanes; especially considering that PCI-E 3.0 allows for up to 32 lanes on a single PCI-E 3.0 x16 slot.
