EverQuest Next is confirmed to use Oculus Rift so the VR support is already there we just gotta find out if PS4 could run it in VR on Morpheus. H1Z1 confirmed VR support as well but thats not exactly what you asked for.

I hope to live in this lifetime to see VR improved to such levels where it's compared to the Matrix. You can download any skill or language pack in seconds, forget months of trying to memorize lessons. You'll have this knowledge an in instant! For a price of course. And then people can also create their own virtual world with virtual societies and people. And add feeling to the VR. But selected feeling. You don't need to die like in that movie, you can select to feel pleasure only or positive feelings. It will be the next new and best drug. I cannot wait!!!

I'm sure 4K will happen but it is ultimately the end of the line of 2D output in terms of visual feed back. It is already possible to get PC GPU's that can push almost any Ps4 game at 4K resolution, that will be trivial stuff by the time the next generation rolls around, around the level of a tablet processor in 4-5 years.

What do you mean by that? Are you saying you can't make out visual details in games in resolutions beyond 4k? Recently someone hacked crysis 3 to run at 8k and the results were reportedly amazing. And far as display manufacturers go, they won't settle at 4k either. There are a couple of 8k monitors out there, sharp showed off two 8k tv's at this year's ces, panasonic has already shown off theirs in 2012 and samsung is also working on manufacturing their 8k tv. But yes, the transition to higher resolutions will definitely take some time, the adoption isn't quick. If you look at 1080p, even that didn't get adopted overnight. It got 'beat' by 720p for quite a few years before becoming mainstream.

Best type of games for me will be flight sims, space sims and racing type games where you are in a $#@!pit of some sort so have some fixed points of reference. I can maybe forsee motion sickness being a huge problem in a fast FPS or third person type action game with so much fast movement and the need to look about the gaming environment quickly. They can try to eliminate as much lag as they can but its still going to be there and the faster you have to move your head the more noticeable its going to be.

See that point about motion sickness you're making. And actually, from what i read in a couple of articles going hands on with vr tech, they stated that motion sickness, to some extent, could be an issue in all types of games, just that in a fast paced fps/tps, the issue could be much more noticeable. no doubt tackling the issue of motion sickness is going to be a genuine challenge for these vr manufacturers when they launch.

For simplicity, let's let the topic stay on consoles, since the majority of PC games never gets optimization consoles do.

The last to generations, the resolution target has jumped 50 percent (using ntsc and 720p as reference). If were getting full 4K next gen, that would be a doubling in resolution. I'm not saying that won't happen, only that if it were to happen, games will probably be upscaled to reach that resolution.

"4K" resolutions resolve approximately 4x the number of pixels of 1920x1080. The current gen consoles can of course easily render at 4K. It's just a matter of framerate and the quality of other graphical features. I'm sure we'll see some games on the PS4 and XB at native 4K, they'll just be more abstract and graphically simple games. Nothing wrong with that. Those are some of my favorites.

    if there's a demand for 4K next-gen, there will be 4K.

let's say if 4K had become popular sometime in 2010 (and we skipped 1080p entirely) and the people who own 1080p TVs all had a 4K TV instead?

Sony and MS would wait until they could produce a console that could handle 4K gaming and was cheap enough to make it. of course, none of this would happen because we can't just skip a generation.

point being, if there's a demand for it, it will happen.

so the question isn't if next-gen consoles will have 4K games, the question is: will 4K TVs become popular by then?

What I'm saying is - consoles won't necessarily keep up with the evolution of TV technology. We've had 1080p TVs since the launch of the PS3, yet most games wasn't even natively 720p. Catch my meaning? We're lucky if games next generation are natively 1640p.

I would be completely fine with the next gen after PS4/XB1 being strictly 1080p on most games, I think 4k is going to take a LOT long to adopt than 1080p ever did...heck, they have 4k TV's out now and there is barely any content for them...not even a successor to blu-ray (which I will be damned if I am re-buying my whole video collection again!)...and I know there is streaming 4k content available, but the bitrate you would need to have crisp quality like a blu-ray does would be insane even with the new codecs that are designed for it.

and that's why my statement is very specific.

just like 1080p was out in 2006, 4K has been out since what, 2013? 12 maybe? but 1080p really just recently became widespread so we see PS4 trying to support it. even X1 is being supported with 1080p. and i think as we go forward, 1080p will be preferred more than 60fps because people don't wanna see a blurry mess on their big screen 1080p.

so unless 4K is not widespread by the time next-gen comes, we will see 4K games even if it means that means they will get hit in performance or resources.

Most console video games never touched native NTSC resolutions anyway.

I'll believe it when I see it and it becomes a worldwide phenomenon. Companies say a lot of things that never come to fruition.

Everything Sony does is almost unfair. They're on another level. Sony is the best in the world at what they do.

I was finally able to try out VR at New York Comic-Con.

It was an Oculus Rift demo of an interactive How To Train Your Dragon experience. They had us put on the headset, put on earphones, and then kneel down in front of a fan while using a bar to steer and fly your dragon over an ocean.

To be honest, I was pretty disappointed. The "screen door effect" was terrible, it wasn't very clear, and the field of view wasn't great, since I could clearly see the blackness around the screen.

Two things I should mention. I was using the "HD Version" of Oculus Rift, not the second development kit, which is better. Also, I'm nearsighted, so my long-distance vision is pretty blurry. From what I understand, VR will be blurry if your long-distance vision is poor, and the headset has to be customized to accommodate. Is that true?

EDIT: Just did more research, and that's true. Nearsighted people need to change the lens type. So I guess my impression isn't very useful.

DK1 is 800p so i imagine screen door effect is horrible. DK2 is 1080p and the makers themselves are currently at 1440p. I imagine consumer product will be 4K so dont worry about screen door effect. It will eventually go away when the tech gets better.
