[UPDATE: Western release!] Dragon Quest VIII 3DS new screenshots and gameplay details

Square Enix has released a new set of screenshots for the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, introducing a couple of new party members Morrie and Red’s skills, a pair of brand new monsters, and more.

    Get the details below.

    Skill Master System

The Skill Master System, which boasts a long history in the Dragon Quest series, is the growth system used in Dragon Quest VIII. You can distribute the skill points you earn by leveling up to a variety of skills to learn various special skills and magic.

    Red’s Special Skills

Red is a lady thief who didn't appear in the original game as a playable character and can learn “Fan” skills. She’s an attack type and can use other thief-like weapons such as the dagger and whip.

A couple of her skills include:

    “Folding Fan” (Fan skill)

“Twin Wave” (Whip skill) – Red bends her whip left and right and strikes the enemy with continuous attacks. Useful against groups of enemies.

    Morrie’s Special Skills

Morrie is an old man with a unique sense. In addition to “Claw” skills, he can also wield other weapons such as club and hammers.

A couple of his skills include:

    “Tiger Claw” (Claw skill)

    “Morrie Burning” (Fervor skill)

When Morrie strikes a pose, flames whirl around him, and within an instant, the enemy is engulfed in a sea of flames.

    Monsters

When you encounter enemies on the field, you’ll enter battle with the enemy. In addition to monsters that appeared in the original version, Dragon Quest VIII for 3DS will also introduce brand new monsters.

    Returning monsters include:

    Jailcat
    Heligator
    Dancing Devil
    Satyr

    New monsters include:

    Morrie Devil

A monster who wears a Morrie costume. Does it have a connection to Morrie, or is it just your ordinary cosplay?

    Slime Pudding

A delicious-looking Slime monster with whipped cream and a cherry on.

    High-Speed Mode

A new command (“Speed”) has been added to the battle menu that lets you speed up the pace of battle. With this feature you can significantly reduce the length of battle. Players can change the battle speed at any time during battle. When in high-speed mode, the words “High Speed” will appear in the upper left of the screen.

Dragon Quest VIII is due out for 3DS in Japan on August 27.

You probably know about this already. I'd say if there's a French release you'll know what that means.

Dragon Quest series creator accidentally shared news that Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King for 3DS are coming to western territories.
Reports are coming in from Twitter:

    • “Yuji Horii has just announced Dragon Quest VII and VIII will be released ‘in French’…?! Apparently a last minute announcement here at Japan Expo. Guess that means both titles at coming West on 3DS. I asked someone from Square Enix and it seems Horii dropping the bomb wasn’t planned.” (via @jkermarrec, 2)
    • “At Japan Expo, a few hours after our interview, Yuji Horii has confirmed here that Dragon Quest VII and VIII are coming ‘in French.'” (via @FFRing)
    • “Horii actually did mention 3DS for Dragon Quest VII and VIII localization. The translator got upset when he did.” (via @RedMakuzawa)

Yeah, the fact that his translator got upset must have meant they were saving the news for a surprise. This is great news for Dragon Quest fans. But I wonder how soon they're planning to release the two games since they're both pretty big?

It'd be funny if what was happening was that they were still debating whether to localize it and he was just taking things into his own hands thinking "Yeah, they can't say 'no' now! Mwah ha ha."

I'm pretty confident between this year and next year. The DragonQuest games are big here and a 3DS port shouldn't be problem since there's already a mobile DQ8 game from the app stores.

No, I mean would they release Dragon Quest VII and VIII in the same year, six months apart, or a year apart? They're both big games, content-wise, and somehow I don't see Dragon Quest XI releasing in the west until 2017.
