Call of Duty series has sold 250 million copies worldwide

Activision has announced that the Call of Duty franchise has sold a staggering 250 million copies worldwide since its inception in 2003.

The news comes following the revelation that the latest entry in the military shooter franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, was the biggest-selling game of 2015 by a “wide-margin in both units and dollars.” As previously reported, it was also the biggest entertainment release of last year.

“This also marks the seventh year in a row that Call of Duty has been the #1 selling franchise in North America, according to NPD,” commented Rob Kostich, General Manager for the Call of Duty series.

“In fact, Call of Duty has surpassed 250 million units sold life-to-date worldwide. This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the incredible passion from the Call of Duty community.”

He went on to say that the publishing giant is looking forward to “what’s to come” in the year ahead, presumably referring to the next chapter in the Call of Duty series, which is currently in development at Infinity Ward.

The series currently rotates through three developers: the aforementioned Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Treyarch. For the first time in the series, games are given a three-year development cycle due to this shifting between studios, something which wasn’t possible during the earlier days of the franchise.

Call of Duty has seen a number of different story arcs launched within the franchise. Aside from the World War II-based games consisting of Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, and Call of Duty: World at War, there’s also the Modern Warfare series, Black Ops, Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare offshoots. In addition, a number of spin-off titles have also been produced over the years, such as Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and Black Ops Declassified.

While it is unknown what type of Call of Duty Infinity Ward is working on for this year, Sledgehammer Games, who will be making next year’s entry, has said it is aiming for hyper realism in a job ad for the upcoming project.

Didn't really think much about this series until I had played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare but if I were to compare that game to Black Ops 3 at a glance it would be pretty mind-boggling. I'm also not sure what Activision mean when they say they're aiming for hyper realism in the next game; you know, if it's anything more than an industry buzzword.

Still play MW2 on PC but currently balls deep in black ops 3, absolutely love it. Probably my favourite since world at war (WaW still my all time CoD).
Logged around 4 days on Bops3 multiplayer and really want to hit master prestige for the WaW prestige badges Every other game has took a back seat (driveclub/bikes, BF4, just cause 3, star wars, the lot). Hardcore Domination is pretty much all I play, only started afew weeks ago from core dom and wish I'd played HC since day one.

Fantastic sales, already got the season pass waiting for the end of Jan when the first map pack is released Haters gonna hate but I don't care, enjoying it would be an understatement in my case

If they want hyper realism then their next game will be like ARMA. If not they have failed.

Is this the game coming to consoles soon, currently only pc? I will admit I was dying for cod to go back to its roots without any jet/boost packs and have a world at war kind of setting without the crazy killstreaks and OTT gadgets.

I'm surprised COD still has the pull that it has, speaking for myself of course, but the recent games have only been just okay... I played the beta for Black Ops 3 (it was multiplayer only) and was quite disappointed - Black Ops 2 was really good (multiplayer and single-player), I'd like to give the single-player of Black Ops 3 a go though.

Unfortunately it's not like a typical cod campaign, it's upto 4 player Co-op or with 3 AI. I haven't touched it so can't comment no more but it's not like the normal linear 5-6hrs all guns blazing, big explosion cinematics etc. To much focus on co-op stuff now days for my liking.
If you do manage to pick it up cheap though I'd highly recommend giving MP another try for afew hours. Can't recall not being on a dedicated server for it as my connection has been superb pretty much since launch. I shoot I kill, I die it was bad aim or a trigger happy teammate in HC Connection wise I will say it is the best I've played, I haven't cursed once for lag.

This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, <---Overall storyline wise I am going to have to disagree with that.

No. It's only on PC only and I don't believe there are plans for it to be available on consoles.

Anyone other then me play the original COD or COD 2.
I got MW1 for ps3 I sucked at it due to using a controller and being more used to a mouse at the time. Also I never liked the wholeft kill streak thing. It made it super hard to beat a player or team that was winning already, seemed very unfair to me.

It's more or less recycled content yet all of us love it, I don't get it??

I do hope they go back to WW2 soon though, not had a decent shooter from that era in years!

You say that Duff but people will complain about that. It's like for every game. People clamor for one thing or another but they end up complaining about it anyway. It's a no win situation.

It's like a drug, people are addicted to it.
For me, I enjoy completing the challenges. I've unlocked all camos for the specialists except for the last I'm currently working on. I enjoy doing this because it also makes you use each specialist for a long period of time so you can experience each ability in various ways.
I've just completed all killer Ops challenges for the animated calling card - the last challenge in killer Ops getting 10 kills without dying from the primary weapon 50 times.

With regards to recycled, what else can they do. The content for black ops 3 is busting at the seams with Co op campaign, nightmare campaign, zombies and online multiplayer along with hundreds of challenges to complete, paintshop, in game theatre/video editor, camos, gear etc etc. The basics will always stay the same with how it plays that'll never change because that's what people love about COD, it's playability. The map design in black ops 3 is one of the best in years, especially the size. Not too big like Ghosts but not too small where it's a complete spawn die spawn die scenario.

I'm surprised that alot of players (in HC anyway) are playing objective based rather than caring about KDR and it makes for a much more intense game trying to capture points in Domination with some games ending with 15+ captures.

The score streaks have been toned down slightly too, there's more supportive score streaks rather than kill streaks which can be the difference in tight objective based games, I don't think I've ever used a guardian or HATR so much across the series.

I'm interested to see what Infinity Ward do with the series next, I wasn't keen on Ghosts so I'll be looking for improvements on that but we know it'll play the same as the others, it's just how will they build their game around that.

I don't really see the appeal of another Call of Duty set in World War II but that's just me.

I'd like to see something like Modern Warfare again where the American and British special forces work together to stop a new terrorist threat. Maybe even include other playable characters from countries like Israel this time around as a third protagonist.

jj when you say add personality do you mean having more characters like Cpt Price?

I liked how for a while they had Price in the games. Was kind of funny at first since he was in the ww2 games but they lifted him from there in put him in the MW series.

Yes I think the game meds to go back. The future thing just isn't doing it. I loved BLOPS 1 campaign was awesome and had a great story, 2 was OK, 3 pretty much sucked IMO. I think it's because they are forcing the future stuff. I think Treyarch works better with the older times. I just wish they would allow them to just go nuts and make whatever they want. Sledgehammer still lacks identify, Treyarch works well with past and IW handles current and future stuff ok. Instead of forcing the issue just let them make whatever. Because you can tell the emphasis is placed on future now.

I've played COD since the original on PC when barely anyone knew about it.

Then COD2 came out and the popularity started rising. COD 2 was my favorite on PC with multiplayer and on PS2. I was also playing Battlefield 2 on PC which was one of the best multiplayer games back in the day.

COD3 was a solid game but by that point people were growing tired of WWII shooters.

Then came Modern Warfare 4 which was excellent all around. Battlefield Bad Company and BC2 were similar but added more destruction and a humorous touch to single player.

Modern Warfare 2 was the one I sunk the most time into on PS3 because I had a good squad to play with on a daily basis.

MW3 fine tuned what MW2 was but felt more like a MW2 expansion pack instead of a stand alone game. MW3 is still a pretty good game on it's own though, especially if you never played MW2.

To me, Black Ops and Black Ops II are the next best COD series after the originals and Modern Warfare series. You get the most content for your buck with single player campaigns, multiplayer, and zombies. I think we would have been fine with just MW, MW2, MW3, BO, and BO2 during the PS3 era. We didn't need Ghosts or Advanced Warfare although AW is far better IMO. With PS4, they should have just continued with a COD 5 Modern Warfare 4 game and Black Ops III (which they did).

Battlefield 4 didn't need to be put on PS3 either. They should have skipped Hardline and fine tuned BF4 a little better for PS4.

Over the past 72 hours, I successfully played multiplayer on every COD that's on PS3 and PS4 besides COD3. That's pretty good considering MW4 is 9 years old and the rest are 5 - 8!

characters with enough of a personality to be remembered. in part why i liked battlefield bad company..soldiers had personality. was thinkin maybe keep the series current, not future, build on a real strong core story, develop characters.
