Dragon Quest Heroes II details castle town and vast fields!!

Square Enix has released new Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy’s End details and screenshots, introducing the game’s castle town of Zebion and vast fields.

If you missed it, most of this information was covered in last week’s Niconico broadcast.

    Get the information below.

    ---

    Towns and Fields

Dragon Quest Heroes II is an action RPG where players control various unique characters and fight through a great war. You’ll prepare for your adventure in town, which acts as your base, travel through various fields and dungeons while heading towards your destination, and defeat the formidable enemies that await you to progress the story.

    (1) Prepare in Town

Talk with the people in town, gather information, and determine your next objective. Utilize a variety of facilities, including equipment and organizational establishments, to prepare for the fields and dungeons.

    (2) Explore Fields and Dungeons

Explore the fields and dungeons while heading towards your destination. Collecting items and defeating monsters to stack up experience points are also important.

    (3) Defeat Formidable Enemies

Formidable enemies sometimes await at your destination. Defeat the enemy and complete your objective to progress the story.

    The Facilities of Zebion

The suzerain state of Zebion, which rules all seven countries of Dragon Quest Heroes II, is the base of your adventure. Take advantage of its various facilities before heading out into the fields and dungeons. These include the church, weapon shop, armor-selling orb shop, accessory-strengthening alchemy pot, and other familiar facilities, as well as a special facilities where curious characters appear.

You can organize your party at Luida’s Bar. You’ll gain new companions as you progress through the story, whom you can switch in and out of your party to control and fight alongside.

Rikka’s Inn acts as the multiplayer reception desk. What kind of companions will you meet, and what kind of battles await?

    Vast Fields

Outside of town are feature-rich fields ranging from grasslands to deserts and so on that players can freely travel between. Monsters loiter these fields, which will become the stage of fierce battles. You’ll also find treasure chests and items, as well as dungeon entrances, so be sure to search every nook and corner of the map.

The area around Orenka is filled with lushly green grasslands. The monsters that appear here are less dangerous compared to others you’ll face, including slimes and slime knights.

The area around Gywall, the protagonists’ home country, is a desert. It’s a hot and dry environment, but a number of monsters inhabit it.

With Waystones, which will unlock as you advance the story, you’ll be able to instantly move between locations.

By examining shining spots, you can obtain a variety of items. Sometimes, treasure chests and pots will also be placed.

In addition to your surrounding terrain, the map also lets you check your location, monster locations, and your next objective.

Formidable enemies and traps await players in the dungeon.

Dragon Quest Heroes II: The Twin Kings and the Prophecy’s End is due out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita on May 27 in Japan.

This sequel seems to be a much bigger jump than I was expecting. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems to be a legit full-fledged open-world RPG, at least in a similar vein to Final Fantasy XII (which I loved).

    Definitely on my radar now.

Yeah, it also reminded me of Final Fantasy XII. Skip to the 7:25 mark of the gameplay video below and you'll even notice how similar it looks when you enter a different location.

Dragon Quest XI might operate similarly with an even larger world map to explore... who knows? The thing about Japanese RPGs that I've come to realize is that they don't necessarily need to be seamless all of the time like Western RPGs; all I expect is for the load times to be quick and that the areas of the game world are interesting.

Also, due to fan demand, it appears that the special dungeon "Space-Time Labyrinth" which was initially announced as co-op only is now available for solo play as well.

Good to see Square Enix listening to their fans.

This only has online co-op I'm assuming? No splitscreen?

That is correct. There is online co-op but no "couch co-op".
