    Utorrent, what happened?

Not used torrents for a while and needed one so went beck to the trusty utorrent, or so I thought.
ITs filled with ads taking up loads of GUI space and you have to pay $5 to remove them or $20 for some other $#@!e nobody wants.
I used to use Bitcomet then switch to utorrent after a suggestion from someone telling me it uses far less resources and stuck with it ever since, until now.

What other clients are out that are simple and lightweight?

Can you thinof any other software that lost its way, by adding stupid features or adverts that intrude when doing something else?

uTorrent also uses your machine to mine for bitcoins when it's turned on. It's basically malware at this point, don't use it.

I use Deluge and it works pretty well.

I did more research into this and it appears utorrent was bought by bittorrent 10 years ago, and also a year or so ago the installer forced a mandatory install of some bitcoin mining client which elevated peoples CPU and even GPU usage when idle.

I don't know what's up with you lot and uTorrent. Mine works A Ok, very minimal processor usage, less than 1%. Certainly no Bitcoin mining here, I believe that was removed very quickly and came mostly from people downloading uTorrent from 3rd party sites. Anyhows. nothing wrong with uTorrent. You want to get rid of adverts though you're gonna have to pay for full version.

You have to opt into it now I think. There was some "offer" to accept or decline when I installed u torrent which might be it, I didn't read it all, u just clicked decline.

It might very well work but u torrents philosophy was being lightweight and no ads etc, but it couldn't be any further from that now.

They are not the first to do such a practice, ever hear of ESEA?
They create anti cheat software and run leagues and host servers for counter strike for many years, but they or someone decided to add a similar app to their clents software, which they pay a fee for already.
It apparently ruined a good number of graphics cards.
Alegedly it was a single rogue employee.

Well uTorrent is super-lightweight. Sure there't are ads there that never used to be but they don't get in my way at all. I used to use Deluge when I was on Linux and it was pretty good. Pretty much just like uTorrent iirc. Horses for courses, if it works it works.

I'm in the same boat as @Major, been using utorrent for a good few years with zero issues. (Always run through a VPN of course! )

Which version you using? Last version I used prior to the latest (3.4) was 2.x the difference is like chalk and Cheese.

Using on a laptop those ads take up quite a chunk of screen space.

    version 3.4.5 here.

I've been on a linux machine for the past 3-4 years so missed any uTorrent editions in that time. When I was Windows before it was sweet as. Now seems fine to me too.

Laptop, yeah, screen space is a premium.

Sure, if you don't mind paying to let them use your machine to mine for bitcoins. Or shove ads down your throat.

Yeah, okay? Okay. Not sure what the point of your response was. Just be aware of what software you use.

uTorrent is ad-filled trash. It'll even randomly play movie ads, which is always a welcome surprise when one has their volume up blasting music. The app isn't what it used to be. If you like uTorrent, but hate what it's become, I'd recommend qBittorrent: http://www.qbittorrent.org/

I would say not because the owners (bit torrent inc) have ties with mpaa.
